Chapter 5 - The First Storm

The heavy front doors of the Vance estate didn't just open; they were pushed wide as Evelyn Vance stepped into the grand marble foyer, flanked by two uniformed police officers and a stern-looking woman holding an official state folder.

Mr. Thorne rushed down the hallway, stammering frantically. “Ms. Vance! You cannot simply enter without Mr. Vance’s explicit permission—”

“Move aside, Thorne,” Evelyn sneered, her heels clicking loudly against the floorboards. “I am executing a court order.”

Julian descended the grand staircase slowly, his face turned to stone, his hands thrust deep into his trouser pockets. Elena followed three steps behind him, her eyes wide with apprehension.

“Evelyn,” Julian said, his voice deadly quiet. “You have ten seconds to remove yourself and these officers from my home before I have security arrest you for trespassing.”

The stern woman stepped forward, lifting a stamped document. “Mr. Vance, I am Agent Miller from Child Protective Services. We have received a verified petition alleging that your minor sons, Leo and Lucas Vance, are being subjected to severe emotional neglect and improper custodial care by uncertified individuals.”

Julian’s jaw locked. “That is a lie.”

“It’s not a lie, Julian!” Evelyn snapped, stepping forward, her eyes flashing with triumphant malice. “Look at you! You’ve locked yourself away in this mausoleum for two years! You fired world-class specialists! And who do you have raising Clara’s children?”

Evelyn swung her arm around, pointing a sharp, manicured finger directly at Elena.

“A disgraced, uneducated house cleaner!” Evelyn barked. “A woman who let her street-rat son crawl into a restricted nursery! You’re out of your mind, Julian! You are unfit to manage those boys, and you are unfit to manage Vance Global!”

Elena flinched as if struck, her cheeks burning with shame. She instinctively took a step back, but before she could retreat into the shadows, Julian’s hand reached out.

In front of the officers, the CPS agent, and Evelyn, Julian wrapped his long fingers firmly around Elena’s hand, pulling her up to stand directly by his side.

The gesture was simple, yet it possessed the force of a mountain.

“Speak about her like that again in my presence, Evelyn,” Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low, “and I will ensure your shares in Vance Global are liquidated by sunrise.”

Evelyn gasped, stepping back slightly.

Agent Miller frowned, looking between Julian, Elena, and the court papers. “Mr. Vance, regardless of personal dynamics, we are legally required to conduct an immediate inspection of the premises and assess the state of the children.”

“Fine,” Julian said coldly. “Follow me.”

The group walked in tense silence down the long corridor toward the east wing.

When Julian opened the door to the nursery, the scene inside defied every single claim printed on Evelyn’s legal petition.

The room was warm, immaculately clean, and filled with the faint, comforting scent of lavender and baby powder.

Sitting on a soft play-mat in the center of the room were the twins. They were wearing matching blue pajamas, quietly stacking soft velvet blocks. Sitting beside them was Toby, fast asleep on a plush dog pillow, a tiny thumb tucked into his mouth.

Leo looked up as the door opened. He didn't scream. He didn't throw a toy.

Instead, his eyes lit up when he saw Julian. He let out a happy gurgle, dropped his block, and rapidly army-crawled across the floor straight toward his father’s shoes.

Julian dropped to one knee, lifting Leo easily into his arms, resting the toddler against his shoulder. Leo buried his small face into Julian’s neck, letting out a soft sigh of complete content.

Lucas crawled over a second later, reaching up to tug at Julian’s pant leg until Julian scooped him up with his other arm, holding both of his sons against his chest.

Agent Miller stood frozen in the doorway. She looked at the two calm, thriving babies, then down at the petition in her hands detailing "screaming, traumatized, malnourished infants."

She looked at Evelyn, her expression souring instantly.

“Ms. Vance,” Agent Miller said sharply, turning to Evelyn. “This petition claims the children are in a state of severe distress and neglect.”

“They’re acting!” Evelyn stammered, her voice rising in panic. “It’s a performance! Two weeks ago, these boys were screaming so loud the neighbors could hear them! Ask the staff! Ask the fourteen nannies!”

“Two weeks ago, my sons didn't have their family,” Julian said, his eyes locking onto Evelyn with absolute malice. “Now they do.”

Agent Miller closed her folder with a sharp snap. “Mr. Vance, I see no evidence of endangerment here. In fact, these children demonstrate strong, healthy attachment to both you and Ms. Rostova. I will be filing a recommendation to dismiss this petition immediately.”

Evelyn’s face turned bright red. “You can’t do this! I am their aunt!”

“And you are leaving my property,” Julian said, stepping forward as Elias appeared at the door with four security guards. “Elias, escort Ms. Vance to the gate. If she sets foot on this estate again, shoot her for treason.”
