Chapter 8 - Secrets of the Heart

The silence that followed Julian’s announcement lasted for three full seconds before the plaza erupted into absolute chaos.

Reporters shouted at the top of their lungs, cameras flashed wildly, and board members frantically crowded around Julian, begging him to reconsider. Without Julian Vance, the ten-billion-dollar European merger would collapse overnight; Vance Global’s stock would plummet into oblivion.

Julian didn't answer a single question.

He wrapped his arm around Elena’s waist, guided her and the three toddlers back down the marble steps, and stepped into the Maybach. The heavy doors clicked shut, cutting off the deafening noise of the world outside.

Inside the quiet vehicle, Elena sat frozen, staring at him in utter disbelief.

“Julian… what did you just do?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You resigned? From your own company?”

Julian leaned his head back against the leather headrest, letting out a long, slow breath. For the first time in two years, the tension in his shoulders was completely gone.

“I didn't resign, Elena,” Julian said, a faint, sharp smirk playing on his lips. “I gave the board a choice. Within two hours, they will force Evelyn off the board, liquidate her shares, and offer me absolute operational control without interference.”

Elena blinked. “You tricked them?”

“I managed them,” Julian corrected smoothly. He turned his head to look at her, his eyes softening instantly. “Though everything I said about you was the absolute truth.”

Elena looked down at her lap, her cheeks turning bright crimson.

Two weeks later, the dust had completely settled.

As Julian predicted, the board had panicked, stripping Evelyn Vance of all corporate authority and issuing a public apology to Julian and Elena. Vance Global’s stock skyrocketed to an all-time high, fueled by a viral surge of public affection for "Seattle’s Tech Titan and the Housekeeper Who Saved His Family."

To celebrate Toby’s third birthday, Julian closed the entire estate to outside staff, hosting a cozy, lavish party on the back lawn overlooking Puget Sound.

Streamers of blue and gold hung from the pine trees. A massive bouncy castle sat near the garden, while a private pastry chef prepared a three-tiered dinosaur cake.

Leo and Lucas, now solid on their feet, were chasing Toby across the soft green grass, shrieking with pure, unstoppable laughter.

Elena stood near the stone patio, watching the boys play, wearing a simple white sundress. She held a glass of lemonade, feeling a deep, profound peace she had never known in her entire life.

A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Elena leaned back into Julian’s broad chest, letting out a soft sigh as his chin rested lightly against her shoulder.

“He’s having a good birthday,” Julian murmured into her hair.

“He thinks he owns the world,” Elena chuckled softly, watching Toby proudly show the twins how to throw a soft foam ball. “Thank you for doing all this, Julian.”

Julian spun her gently around in his arms so she was facing him. His grey eyes were intense, filled with an emotion so deep it made her breath catch in her throat.

“I didn't do this for Toby, Elena,” Julian whispered, his thumb trailing down her cheekbone. “I did it for my family. For our family.”

Elena looked up into his eyes, her heart beating a frantic, joyous rhythm. “Julian…”

“I know where you came from, Elena,” Julian said softly. “I know you spent your life fighting for every inch, trusting no one, carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. But you don't have to fight anymore. Let me carry it with you.”

Before she could speak, Julian reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy-velvet box.
