Chapter 6 - The Plot Unravels

The failure of the CPS raid sent shockwaves through the executive offices of Vance Global.

Deprived of her legal leverage, Evelyn shifted her attack to the court of public opinion. By the following Tuesday, leaked rumors began appearing on financial tabloids and social media feeds:

IS SEATTLE’S TOP TECH TITAN LOSING HIS MIND? JULIAN VANCE REPLACES ELITE CARE WITH UNQUALIFIED HOUSEKEEPER.

The company’s stock dipped three percent in early morning trading. Board members began demanding an emergency session, anxious that Julian’s personal life was threatening a pending ten-billion-dollar merger with a European green-energy consortium.

Inside the Vance estate, the tension was palpable.

Elena stood in the kitchen, watching the news ticker scroll across the television screen. Her name wasn't explicitly mentioned, but phrases like "unvetted domestic worker" and "street-level influence" were splashed across the screen in bold yellow text.

She felt a cold weight settling in her stomach.

I am destroying his life, she thought, her hands trembling as she wiped the marble counter. His company, his reputation… all because Toby wandered into that room.

“You’re thinking too loud,” a deep voice said from behind her.

Elena turned. Julian was standing in the doorway, wearing a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, holding two cups of coffee. He walked over, handing one mug to her.

“I should leave, Julian,” Elena said quietly, looking down at the dark liquid.

Julian froze, his eyes narrowing instantly. “What did you say?”

“The press… your board… your stock price,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking slightly. “They’re using me and Toby to tear you down. If I take Toby and go back to my apartment, Evelyn loses her ammunition. You can hire a proper governess now—the boys are doing so much better, they’re ready for—”

“Stop,” Julian commanded, his voice laced with an intense, quiet fury.

He set his coffee cup down on the counter with a heavy thud, taking two fast steps forward until he was standing inches from her, trapping her between his body and the counter.

“Do you think I care about stock prices, Elena?” Julian asked, his voice shaking with raw emotion. “Do you think I build servers and sign infrastructure deals because it brings me joy? The only thing that kept me breathing through the dark was keeping those two boys alive.”

He reached out, his long fingers gently grasping her chin, forcing her to look up into his fierce grey eyes.

“You saved my children,” Julian whispered, his thumb brushing softly across her lower lip. “You saved me. If the board wants my seat, they can take it. If the press wants a scandal, I will give them one. But you and Toby are never leaving this house.”

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. The heat between them was unbearable, an electric current that had been building for weeks finally breaking through the dam.

Before she could speak, Julian’s phone buzzed violently against the counter.

He ignored it, his eyes still locked on her face.

It buzzed again. And again.

Elena cleared her throat softly, stepping back slightly. “You… you should answer that.”

Julian released her chin reluctantly, picking up the phone. “What is it, Elias?”

Elias’s voice came through the speaker, urgent and rushed. “Boss, we have a situation. Evelyn just called a rogue press conference outside the Vance Global headquarters. She’s addressing the board and the media in twenty minutes. She’s planning to call for a vote of no confidence, claiming you’re mentally unfit to lead.”

Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure steel.

“Tell the drivers to bring the Maybach to the front,” Julian ordered coldly. “And Elias?”

May you like

“Yes, Boss?”

“Tell the media to set up two extra microphones. I’m bringing the heirs.”
