Chapter 5 - The Trial of Shadows

Three months later.

The United States Federal Courthouse in Manhattan was swarming with hundreds of reporters, news cameras, and federal marshals.

The trial of Arthur Moreau and the executives of the Moreau Bio-Medical Institute had become the largest corporate medical scandal in American history.

Exposed by three hundred pages of encrypted research files—retrieved from a hidden server key that Claire Bennett had kept buried in her mother’s old house—the company was dismantled by federal prosecutors. Over forty executives were indicted on charges of illegal human testing, corporate espionage, and attempted murder.

Inside the grand marble hallway of the courthouse, Claire Bennett stood near the window, wearing a tailored charcoal suit. She looked stunning, her brown hair styled in soft waves, her posture straight and proud.

Beside her stood Grant Holloway, looking sharp in a navy blue suit, his arm resting protectively behind her back.

Dr. Allison Crane and Dr. Nathan Reed from Sterling Children's Hospital walked up to them, holding a stack of legal documents.

"Dr. Bennett," Dr. Crane said warmly, using Claire's true title for the first time. "The State Medical Board has officially reinstated your surgical license with full honors. The charges against you have been completely erased from the public record."

Claire took the official certificate with shaking hands, tears of joy welling in her eyes. "Thank you, Allison."

Dr. Reed stepped forward, looking deeply embarrassed. He extended his hand toward Claire. "Dr. Bennett... I owe you a formal apology. Three months ago, I was ready to throw you out of an ER room because of my own ego. If you hadn't looked inside that ear... that little girl would have suffered catastrophic harm."

Claire took Reed’s hand, shaking it with a warm, forgiving smile. "We all learn from our patients, Doctor. Just remember to look past the overhead lights next time."

Reed chuckled, nodding respectfully before turning to walk down the hall.

Once the doctors left, Grant looked down at Claire, a tender smile touching his sharp features. "How does it feel to have your life back, Doctor?"

Claire looked up at him, her dark eyes shining with deep emotion. She reached out, taking his hand, intertwining her fingers with his.

"I don't just have my life back, Grant," Claire whispered softly. "I have something so much better."

Over the past three months, while staying under Grant's protection during the federal investigation, Claire had transformed the Holloway estate. She had brought life, warmth, and laughter back into the stone mansion.

And most of all, she had become an indispensable anchor in the lives of both Grant and his daughter.

"Lily is waiting in the car," Grant said gently, pulling her slightly closer. "She made another drawing for you today."

Claire laughed warmly. "Another ladybug?"

"A ladybug wearing a nurse's cap," Grant corrected, his voice dropping into a deep, rich tone of adoration. "She wants to know if you're coming home for dinner tonight."

Claire looked into Grant’s dark gray eyes, seeing the quiet, unshakeable devotion that had protected her when the whole world was coming after her.

"I'm always coming home, Grant," she said softly.
