Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Greenwich

The high iron gates of the fifty-acre Holloway Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, swung shut with a heavy, mechanical clang behind Grant’s armored Cadillac Escalade.
Four armed security vehicles took up positions along the winding brick driveway as the convoy pulled up to the front entrance of the massive stone mansion.
The interior of the house was warm, filled with soft light and grand architectural timber, but it felt strangely empty. Since the death of Grant's wife, Clara, three years ago, the house had been treated less like a home and more like a high-security sanctuary designed to keep the outside world away from Lily.
Inside the grand living room, a private physician hired by Grant was re-checking Lily’s vitals on a plush leather sofa, while Lily happily munched on a warm bowl of soup prepared by the estate's chef.
Claire stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking the foggy garden, holding a mug of chamomile tea with both hands. She looked completely out of place in her faded blue nursing scrubs against the backdrop of multi-million-dollar oil paintings and marble fireplaces.
Grant walked over, carrying two glasses of water. He handed one to her.
"She likes you," Grant said softly, gesturing toward Lily, who was pointing at her ladybug toy and laughing with the estate nurse. "She hasn't laughed like that in three years."
Claire looked over at the little girl, a soft, bittersweet expression gracing her features. "She’s a resilient little girl, Grant. She just needed someone to listen to what she was actually saying, instead of trying to fit her pain into a standard medical checklist."
Grant leaned against the window frame, watching Claire. "Like you did?"
Claire took a slow sip of her tea. "I was a senior research surgeon at the Moreau Bio-Medical Institute in Boston two years ago," she said quietly, finally deciding to speak the truth.
Grant’s eyebrows raised slightly. "A surgeon?"
"My name was Dr. Claire Bennett," she continued, her voice heavy with remembered trauma. "I was leading a team developing advanced micro-neurological sensors—devices designed to be implanted into the auditory and optic nerves to restore hearing and sight to disabled children."
"Sounds miraculous," Grant noted.
"It was," Claire whispered, her eyes clouding over. "Until I discovered what Arthur Moreau was actually using the technology for. He wasn't building medical implants. He was weaponizing the micro-sensors for military covert surveillance... and he was testing them illegally on orphaned children in unregistered overseas clinics."
Grant’s jaw tightened into iron. "You tried to blow the whistle."
"I gathered three hundred pages of internal lab reports, encrypted server files, and patient logs," Claire said, tears shining in her eyes. "I was going to the Department of Justice. But Moreau found out. My apartment was burned down. My medical license was revoked overnight on falsified charges of clinical malpractice. And my research assistant... died in a 'car accident' two days later."
Grant felt a dark, lethal rage rising in his chest. "So you went into hiding."
"I changed my identity, took a basic nursing credential, and fled to New York," Claire said, looking up at him. "I just wanted to be invisible. I wanted to help kids in quiet ways where nobody would notice me. But tonight... when I saw Lily... I couldn't just stand there and let her suffer."
Grant walked closer to her. Without thinking, he reached out, his broad hand gently covering hers where she held the tea mug. His touch was warm, solid, and completely reassuring.
"You saved my daughter tonight, Claire," Grant said, his voice deep and dark with unshakeable resolve. "You stopped running the second you stepped into this house."
Before Claire could answer, the glass windows of the grand living room vibrated with a sudden, violent thrum.
Outside in the driveway, the sharp screech of tearing metal and sudden gunfire echoed through the foggy night air.

Marcus threw the double oak doors open, his gun drawn. "Boss! We've got a perimeter breach! Armed team at the north gate!"
Grant pulled Claire behind his back in a single, fluid motion, his dark eyes flashing with lethal intent. "They found us."
