Chapter 6 - The Picture of True Wealth

Two years later, the sun was setting over the backyard of Miguel and Elena’s house in Sacramento.
The air was filled with the delicious aroma of carne asada cooking on the grill and the sound of laughter. String lights hung from the branches of the old oak tree, casting a warm, golden glow over a long wooden table set up on the grass.
Miguel stood by the grill, a cold beer in his hand, laughing heartily at a joke Lucas Vance had just told. Lucas had his sleeves rolled up, helping Miguel flip the meat, his comfort around Isabella’s parents completely natural and effortless.
Elena sat at the table, showing a photo album to Lucas’s mother, who had traveled from Oregon to spend the weekend with them. The two mothers were chatting like old friends, their shared laughter filling the yard.
Isabella watched them from the kitchen window, a deep, overwhelming sense of gratitude washing over her.
She walked out onto the porch, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade. Lucas immediately looked up, his eyes lighting up the moment he saw her. He walked over, taking the heavy tray from her hands and placing it on the table before wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her close.
"You look beautiful," he whispered, kissing her cheek.
"I'm just wearing a sundress and an apron," Isabella laughed, leaning her head against his shoulder.
"Exactly," Lucas smiled. "Perfect."
Over the past two years, Lucas had become an indispensable part of her life. He had stood by her as she built her career, loved her parents as if they were his own, and showed her every single day what real partnership looked like. There were no secrets, no demands for "appearances," and no transactional affection. There was only mutual respect, honesty, and a deep, unshakeable love.
Later that evening, as everyone sat around the long table, raising their glasses of lemonade and wine, Miguel stood up to make a toast.
He looked at Isabella, his eyes glistening with tears of pride, and then at Lucas.
"To my daughter, Isabella," Miguel said, his voice thick with emotion. "Who taught us that true dignity can never be bought, and that family is the only thing worth protecting. And to Lucas, who showed us that a real man doesn't build himself up by pushing others down. We are so blessed."
As everyone cheered and clinked their glasses, Isabella reached under the table, her hand finding Lucas’s. Their fingers intertwined, strong and secure.

She looked around the table at the laughing faces of the people she loved most. They didn't have a multi-million-dollar estate, a crystal chandelier, or a high-society guest list.
But as Isabella looked at her father’s happy, relaxed face and the warmth in Lucas’s eyes, she knew she had finally found the perfect wedding—and a life built on a foundation that no amount of money could ever buy.
