Chapter 3 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The drive back to her parents’ modest home in the outskirts of Sacramento was completely silent. Isabella sat in the passenger seat of her father's old pickup truck, still wearing her white wedding gown, her hands resting in her lap.

When they finally pulled into the driveway of the small, single-story house she had grown up in, the tension in Isabella’s shoulders finally broke. She collapsed into her mother's arms on the front porch, weeping tears of anger, betrayal, and relief.

"I am so sorry, mija," Elena whispered, stroking her daughter's hair. "We only wanted you to have the beautiful wedding you deserved. We didn't know they would treat us like garbage."

"It's not your fault, Mom," Isabella sobbed. "They are monsters. But I promise you, Dad is getting his money back. Every single cent."

Miguel sat on the porch step, his head in his hands. "How, Isabella? I signed the papers. I authorized the transfer. Legally, I gave it to them. The lawyers will say it was a gift."

Isabella wiped her tears, a cold, sharp determination settling in her chest. "They might have the expensive lawyers, Dad. But they also have a reputation to uphold. And in their world, reputation is worth more than six hundred thousand dollars."

By the next morning, the scandal had exploded.

A guest at the wedding had recorded the entire altar confrontation on their phone, and by midnight, the video had gone viral on social media. The headlines were ruthless:

“Napa Valley Nuptials Nightmare: Sullivan Family Accused of Draining Bride’s Father’s Retirement.” “The $640k Scam: How a Luxury Wedding Unmasked High-Society Cruelty.”

The Sullivan family’s luxury real estate firm, Sullivan & Associates, was suddenly flooded with negative reviews and protests. Clients began pulling their listings.

On Monday morning, Isabella’s phone rang. It was an unknown number. She answered it, expecting a reporter, but the voice on the other end was cold, sharp, and entirely familiar.

"Isabella," Veronica Sullivan said, her voice trembling with a rage she was desperately trying to suppress. "You have had your little moment of revenge. The internet is having its laugh. Now, you will release a statement saying it was all a misunderstanding, or my lawyers will sue you and your pathetic family for defamation until you don't even have a roof over your heads."

Isabella leaned back in her chair, a calm smile playing on her lips. "Go ahead and sue, Veronica. But before you do, you should know that I’ve already spoken to a forensic accountant. We are looking into how you processed that $640,000 transfer. You declared it as a 'wedding gift' on your tax documents, didn't you? But we both know you used it to cover your own family's mounting debts before the wedding even started. Let's see how the IRS feels about your 'family contributions.'"

There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.

"What do you want?" Veronica hissed.

"I want my father's $640,000 back in his account by five o'clock today," Isabella said, her voice like steel. "And I want a written, notarized apology to my parents. If the money isn't there, the next video I post will be the financial records."
