Chapter 4 - The Clean Break

At 4:45 PM that afternoon, Miguel Moreno’s phone buzzed with a notification from his bank.

Miguel stared at the screen, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped the phone. He looked up at Isabella, who was sitting at the kitchen table, a quiet sense of victory washing over her.
"It's there," Miguel whispered, his voice cracking. "Isabella... it's all back."
Elena gasped, covering her mouth as tears of relief filled her eyes. She threw her arms around her husband, the crushing weight of financial ruin finally lifted from their family's shoulders.
But Isabella knew this was only the first step. She had saved her family from financial devastation, but her own heart was still a battlefield of broken trust and shattered dreams. She had spent three years of her life loving Adrian, believing he was the man who would stand by her side through everything. Knowing that he had looked her in the eyes every day while helping his mother systematically exploit her father was a wound that would take a long time to heal.
A few days later, Isabella returned to her apartment in San Francisco to pack up her belongings. She wanted a fresh start, far away from the elite circles of Napa Valley and the shadow of the Sullivans.
As she was taping up the final box, there was a knock at her door.
She opened it to find Adrian standing on the threshold. He looked terrible. His hair was messy, his expensive suit was rumpled, and the confident, arrogant posture he usually held was completely gone.
"Isabella," he said, his voice pleading. "Please. Just give me five minutes."
"You shouldn't be here, Adrian," Isabella said, holding the door firmly.
"I had to see you," he said, stepping forward. "My mother... she’s furious. The firm is losing clients every day. But I don't care about the firm anymore, Isabella. I care about us. I made a mistake. I let my mother get inside my head. I was terrified of losing the family inheritance, so I went along with her plans. But I love you. We can start over. Just the two of us. We can leave them behind."
Isabella looked at him. For the first time, she didn't see a charming, successful partner. She saw a boy who was too weak to stand up for what was right, a man who only cared about the consequences when they finally affected him.

"You don't love me, Adrian," Isabella said softly, her voice remarkably calm. "You love the way I made you feel like a good person. But a good person doesn't watch their future father-in-law destroy his life just to fund a party. You didn't make a mistake. You made a choice. And now, you have to live with it."
She slowly closed the door on him, locking it with a firm, final click.
