Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

"This is an outrage!" Veronica stood up, her face flushed a dark, angry red, the elegant mask she had worn for decades shattering in an instant. "She is hysterical! Adrian, do something! This girl is insane!"
Adrian turned to Isabella, his eyes wide with a mixture of panic and anger. "Isabella, you've ruined everything! Do you have any idea who is in this room? The board members of my father's firm are here! Investors are here! You are making a scene over a simple family contribution!"
Isabella looked at the man she had loved, the man she had planned to build a life with. "A contribution, Adrian? He gave you his retirement. And you knew, didn't you?"
Adrian hesitated, his silence confirming her worst fears.
"I heard you," Isabella said softly, the microphone catching the devastating quietness of her voice. "I heard you in your dressing room. 'Just make sure Isabella never finds out.' 'Put her parents near the service entrance so they don't ruin the photos.' You didn't just know, Adrian. You helped her plan it."
"Isabella, it was for the family image!" Adrian hissed, trying to grab her hands, his voice desperate. "Once we're married, my family's assets become ours anyway. What does it matter where the initial money came from? It was a temporary arrangement to keep up appearances!"
"Appearances," Isabella whispered, looking at him with deep disgust. "You traded my father's entire life for a few pretty pictures and the approval of people who don't even care about you."
She looked down at her finger, where a flawless five-carat diamond ring sat. Without a word, she slid it off her finger. She didn't drop it. She took Adrian’s hand, placed the ring in his palm, and closed his fingers over it.
"The wedding is over," Isabella said.
She turned away from the altar, her heavy train sweeping behind her. She walked down the long, white-carpeted aisle, ignoring the hundreds of eyes staring at her in stunned silence. She walked past the rows of luxury chairs, past the towering floral arrangements, straight toward the back of the pavilion.
Miguel and Elena had stood up, tears streaming down their faces. Her father looked terrified, but as Isabella approached, his chest rose with a protective instinct.
"Isabella..." Miguel whispered, his voice trembling. "I'm so sorry. I didn't want to ruin your day."
May you like
"You didn't ruin anything, Dad," Isabella said, her voice filled with a fierce, protective love. She reached out, taking her father's rough hand in her left, and her mother's hand in her right. "You saved me. Let's go home."
As the three of them walked out of the pavilion together, the sound of Veronica’s screaming and the frantic murmurs of the guests faded into the background. Behind them, the perfect Sullivan family legacy lay in ruins.
