Chapter 6 - A Promise Kept

That evening, as the stars began to twinkle over the Milan skyline, Alessandro walked into Emma’s bedroom in the main wing of the villa.

The room was spacious and warm, decorated with soft pastel colors, shelves filled with storybooks, and a large bay window overlooking the gardens.

Emma was tucked under her heavy down comforter, her small head resting on a soft pillow. Mister Blue was tucked safely under her right arm, and her golden retriever puppy was fast asleep on the rug beside her bed.

Alessandro sat down on the edge of the mattress, his large frame making the soft bed dip slightly.

"Did Mister Blue have a good day?" Alessandro asked in a soft whisper, tucking the blanket around her shoulders.

"Yes," Emma murmured sleepily, her eyelids heavy. "He said he likes the new house. He says there are no mean people here."

"There never will be again," Alessandro promised, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "I will make sure of it."

Emma opened her eyes slightly, looking at him with her large, dark, trusting eyes. "Alessandro?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Do you know why Mister Blue gave you the key that night?"

Alessandro paused, looking down at the small child who had completely transformed his life. "Why?"

"Because," Emma whispered, her voice fading as she slowly drifted off to sleep, "he knew you were sad... and he wanted to give you your home back."

Alessandro went completely still. A tear—warm, silent, and filled with deep, overwhelming gratitude—escaped his eye and trickled down his cheek. He wiped it away with his knuckle, a deep, beautiful peace washing over his soul.

"He did, Emma," Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "He really did."

He stood up quietly, blowing out the small candle on the bedside table, leaving only the soft blue glow of the nightlight shaped like a moon.

As he stepped out into the hallway, I was standing there waiting for him, leaning against the doorframe with a warm smile on my face.

Alessandro walked up to me, pulling me gently into his arms, resting his chin on top of my head as we stood together in the quiet, peaceful darkness of our home.

"She's asleep?" I asked softly.

May you like

"She is," Alessandro murmured, holding me tighter. "And so is the rest of the world."

For the first time in his life, the most feared man in Milan was not guarding an empire of shadows. He was standing in the light, holding the family he loved, knowing that no matter how dark the world outside might become, the truth, love, and light inside Villa Moretti would shine forever.
