Chapter 2 - The Sealed Vault

A suffocating silence descended once more upon the hallway.

Vivian’s face drained of color so fast it looked as if her blood had stopped circulating. "She's lying!" Vivian gasped, her voice shrill, shattering the elegant atmosphere of the hall. "She's a thieving little bastard! She took it from my purse—or her mother did!"

"Vivian," Alessandro said, his tone entirely flat. "Why was the key to my brother’s private vault in your handbag?"

"It wasn't!" Vivian stammered, backing up against the marble wall. "I—I don't know what that key is! The child is making it up! Look at her, she's wearing rags! They're trying to frame me to extract money from you!"

Don Ricci stepped forward, his heavy cane thumping rhythmically against the floor. The old man’s face was carved with deep lines of decades spent surviving mafia wars. "The child is three, Vivian. She does not know what a vault key looks like. But I do." Ricci picked up the key from Emma’s small hand, examining the lion's crest under the chandelier light. "This is Julian Moretti's key. The one that vanished the night he was ambushed on the Autostrada."

The twelve families slowly poured out of the salon, surrounding the corridor in a wall of dark suits and glittering jewels. Don Matteo Romano, Vivian’s father, pushed his way to the front, his heavy brow furrowed in sudden alarm.

"Alessandro, let us not make scenes based on the babble of a maid's child," Don Matteo said smoothly, placing a heavy hand on Alessandro’s shoulder. "Vivian is young. Perhaps she picked up a key by mistake—"

Alessandro moved so fast the eye could barely track it.

He seized Don Matteo’s wrist, removing the older man's hand from his shoulder with terrifying strength, and forced Matteo back a step.

"My brother died in a rain of gunfire four years ago, Matteo," Alessandro said, his voice a lethal whisper. "The man who set him up was never found. The only thing missing from his body was this key."

Alessandro turned his dark eyes onto Vivian. "Open your bag."

"No!" Vivian cried, clutching her red leather purse to her chest. "This is an outrage! I am your fiancée!"

"Open the bag, Vivian," Alessandro repeated, "or I will have Lorenzo cut it off your arm."

Lorenzo, the chief security director of Villa Moretti—a six-foot-four wall of muscle and scar tissue—stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, his hand resting on the grip of his holstered firearm.

Vivian looked around the circle of high-society monsters she had called her peers. Her father looked away, realizing the tide had turned. Don Ricci simply watched with cold, analytical eyes.

With shaking, manicured hands, Vivian unzipped the Versace clutch and turned it upside down over the console table.

A gold compact fell out. A lipstick. A silk handkerchief.

And a small, encrypted satellite burner phone—the exact model used by the rival Corsican syndicate that had ordered the hit on Julian Moretti four years ago.
