Chapter 3 - The Cipher in the Velvet

The burner phone landed with a heavy, metallic thud against the marble table.

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Alessandro picked up the phone. It was active, its screen glowing softly in the ambient light of the corridor. On the display was an unread text message received less than ten minutes ago:

“Is Moretti signed? Does the Romano union hold?”

Alessandro looked from the phone to Vivian, his expression completely unreadable. "You didn't just come here to marry me, did you, Vivian? You came to finish what your family started four years ago."

"Alessandro, please!" Vivian fell to her knees, weeping hysterically, all her high-society composure entirely shattered. "My father forced me! The Corsicans threatened to destroy the Romano family if we didn't give them access to the Moretti vault network! I didn't want to do it! I swear!"

Don Matteo Romano’s face turned gray. He reached for his inner jacket pocket, but before his fingers could even graze his holster, Lorenzo fired two silenced shots into the floor directly between Matteo’s shoes.

"Don't move, Matteo," Lorenzo commanded coolly.

Don Ricci shook his head in absolute disgust. "To sell out northern blood to the Corsicans... you are a disgrace to the council, Matteo. A rat in silk."

Alessandro ignored the shouting and the rising commotion among the twelve families. He turned slowly back toward me and Emma.

Emma was watching the scene with wide, curious eyes, her small hand still clutching my thumb. She looked up at Alessandro as he approached us once more.

"Clara," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet, genuine gravity. "I owe you an apology. My house was compromised, and you and your daughter were put in harm's way because of my blindness."

"Mr. Moretti, please," I said, my heart pounding in my chest. "I just want to take Emma upstairs."

"You will," he said softly. "But first..."

He knelt down one final time before Emma. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, beautifully polished silver coin—a commemorative Moretti family coin given only to those who held absolute immunity within the syndicate's territory.

He gently placed the silver coin into the small pocket of Emma’s denim overalls, right next to where she had kept the vault key.

"This is for Mister Blue," Alessandro said, offering my daughter a rare, warm smile that transformed his intimidating face completely. "Tell him that as long as he lives in Villa Moretti, no one will ever raise a hand against him—or his mother—again."

Emma giggled, patting the pocket. "Mister Blue says thank you, mister."
