Chapter 8 - Confrontation in the Storm

At 2:00 PM, the emergency board meeting of CarterTech Corporation was convened at the global headquarters on Wacker Drive.

Because of the severe blizzard, most board members were attending via secure video conference from their homes or private estates. Only Julian Vance—acting as interim chairman while Nathan was supposedly "indisposed"—sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table in the glass-walled boardroom on the eighty-fifth floor.

Julian was a polished, immaculate man in his late fifties, dressed in a custom three-piece charcoal suit, sipping espresso while reviewing the final papers for a six-billion-dollar merger with a European pharmaceutical conglomerate—the very merger built on Sarah’s stolen algorithm.

"Given the severe weather and Mr. Carter’s absence," Julian declared smoothly to the digital monitors around the room, "I move that we finalize the vote to execute the patent transfer of the Bio-Neural Network."

"Not so fast, Julian."

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.

Nathan Carter stepped into the room. He was not wearing his usual polished executive attire. He wore a simple dark sweater, his coat damp with snow. Beside him walked Marcus, along with two federal prosecutors and three officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered his suave composure. "Nathan! Good lord, man, we thought you were snowed in at Lincoln Park. What is the meaning of this interruption?"

"The merger is canceled, Julian," Nathan said, walking slowly down the length of the long table.

Julian laughed smoothly. "Nathan, don't be emotional. I know today is the anniversary week of Sarah’s passing, but business must move forward. The board has already approved—"

"I didn't come here to talk about business, Julian," Nathan interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so cold it silenced the entire room. "I came to talk about Elena Vance."

The name hit Julian like a physical shock. The color drained from his face, his fingers twitching against his leather folder. "Elena Vance? The embezzler who killed herself five years ago? Nathan, what madness is this?"

Nathan tapped a button on his tablet. The giant primary screen of the boardroom flickered to life.

Instantly, audio recordings began playing through the high-fidelity room speakers—Julian’s own voice from five years ago, captured on Elena’s encrypted drive, giving explicit orders to alter Sarah’s clinical trial dates and threatening to frame Elena if she ever spoke to Nathan.

“If Nathan finds out about the algorithm modification, he’ll destroy the company,” Julian’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the boardroom. “Make sure the girl Vance never speaks to anyone. Frame her, ruin her, make her disappear. I don't care if she ends up in the river.”

The board members on the video monitors gasped in collective horror.

Julian stood up so fast his chair rolled back against the glass window. "This... this is a forgery! An AI deepfake! You can't prove any of this!"

"We don't have to prove it here, Julian," one of the FBI agents stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "We have the original server logs, the financial paper trail, and an eyewitness who has just been placed under federal witness protection."

Julian stumbled back against the glass, his eyes wide with wild, frantic panic. "Eyewitness? Who? She’s dead! She froze to death years ago!"

"She almost did," Nathan said, leaning over the table, looking Julian directly in the eyes with absolute, unyielding coldness. "Last night, in the worst blizzard this city has seen in a decade, she was dying on a bench by the river. But my five-year-old daughter walked up to her and handed her a warm cup of soup."

Nathan smiled—a cold, fierce, beautiful smile.

"You built an empire on greed and cruelty, Julian. But a little girl with a cup of soup just tore it all down."
