Chapter 4 - Ghost of a Forgotten Life

The snow fell around them in an icy blur, but inside Nathan’s mind, time stopped completely.
Elena Vance.
Five years ago, Elena had not been a homeless woman freezing on a river bench. She had been a brilliant, rising research scientist at CarterTech—and the closest personal friend of Nathan’s late wife, Sarah.
When Sarah died during childbirth five years ago—the night Chloe was born—the world had crumbled for Nathan. In the dark months that followed, Elena had been the anchor who helped care for newborn Chloe while Nathan spiraled into deep, agonizing grief. Elena was the one who held Chloe in the hospital nursery, who sang her to sleep when Nathan couldn't bear to face the room, who gave the baby her middle name.
And then, five winters ago, during the coldest week of February, Elena had vanished without a trace.
The official corporate audit reported that Elena had embezzled millions from CarterTech’s medical AI division and fled the country. Police investigations found a abandoned car near the lake with a suicide note, but no body was ever recovered. Nathan, overwhelmed by grief for his deceased wife, had accepted the board's findings with a heavy heart, believing his trusted friend had betrayed them all and taken her own life.
Now, standing in a raging blizzard five years later, the "traitor" was sitting before him in rags, dying of exposure on a public bench.
"Nathan..." Elena whispered, her head drooping as hypothermia pulled her toward unconsciousness. "I didn't... take it... Sarah's code... they lied..."
Her eyes rolled back, and her body slumped sideways off the bench.
"Elena!" Nathan caught her before she hit the ice, pulling her frail, frozen body into his arms. She weighed almost nothing—her frame was gaunt, her clothes stiff with frozen grime.
Chloe dropped the soup cup into the snow, her eyes wide with terror. "Daddy! Is she broken? Is the soup lady going to die?"
"No, sweetie! She’s not going to die!" Nathan roared over the wind, picking Elena up into a fireman's carry. "Marcus! Get the door! Warm the cab! Emergency mode!"
Marcus was already there, taking Elena’s legs and helping Nathan lift her into the back seat of the SUV. Nathan laid her across the leather bench, frantically pulling off his own heavy goose-down parka and wrapping it tightly around her shivering frame.
"Chloe, get in! Hold her hands, keep talking to her!" Nathan instructed urgently as he climbed into the front passenger seat. "Marcus, bypass the public hospitals. Take us to the private CarterTech Medical Research Facility on Ontario Street. Call Dr. Harrison—tell him to clear Trauma Room 1 immediately!"
"On it, sir!" Marcus slammed the SUV into gear. The heavy vehicle lurged forward, tires spinning briefly on the thick ice before catching traction and tearing through the whiteout, red lights flashing through the storm.
In the back seat, tiny Chloe climbed onto the leather seat next to Elena. She didn't cry or panic. Instead, she took both of Elena’s freezing, numb hands into her own mittened paws and held them tightly against her chest.

"Don't worry, Elena," Chloe whispered softly, her sweet voice cutting through the hum of the engine and the howling storm outside. "My daddy is super strong. He fixes everything. You just have to stay warm, okay? We brought you soup."
A single tear slipped down Elena’s cold cheek, unfreezing in the heat of the cabin, as she slipped into complete darkness.
