Chapter 7 - The Trial of Memory

By morning, the blizzard outside had settled into a bitter, blinding blue sky. The city was buried under three feet of snow, locked in deep freeze.

Inside Room 402 of the medical center, Elena opened her eyes.

The room was warm and quiet. Soft morning sunlight streamed through the frosted window. She was hooked up to a quiet heart monitor and an IV drip, wrapped in soft, heated blankets.

Sitting in a chair beside her bed was Nathan. In his hands, he held a warm cup of broth.

Elena looked at him, her eyes filling with instant panic and shame. She tried to pull away, her pale hands clutching the bedsheets.

"Nathan... I'm sorry," she wept, her voice weak and trembling. "I shouldn't have said anything... I shouldn't have let you see me. Julian... if Julian finds out I'm alive..."

"Julian can't hurt you anymore, Elena," Nathan said softly, his voice echoing with unbreakable authority. He set the cup down and took her hand—the hand that had been frozen twelve hours ago. "I decoded the drive. I know everything."

Elena froze, her breath hitching in her chest. "You... you know?"

"I know Sarah didn't have to die," Nathan said, tears finally breaking through his stoic composure, glinting in his eyes. "I know you tried to save her. I know you sacrificed your entire life to protect Chloe from Julian’s threats. You weren't a thief, Elena. You were our guardian angel."

Elena covered her face with her trembling hands and sobbed uncontrollably—five years of fear, shame, isolation, and freezing cold pouring out in a torrent of honest grief.

The door softly clicked open.

Chloe walked into the room, holding Mr. Teddy by his arm. She looked at Elena crying, then walked straight over to the side of the bed.

"Don't cry, soup lady," Chloe said gently, patting Elena’s knee. "Daddy fixed the bad weather. And Dr. Harrison said you get to eat real food today, not just broth."

Elena looked down at the tiny girl—the child she had helped deliver, the child whose face she had watched from dark street corners across five brutal Chicago winters.

"Thank you, Chloe," Elena choked out, reaching down to gently gently touch the little girl's golden hair. "You brought me soup when I was frozen."

"It’s what we do when the snow is mean," Chloe said matter-of-factly, smiling brightly.

Nathan looked at his daughter, then at Elena. The resolution in his mind solidified into steel.

"Today, Elena," Nathan said, rising to his feet, "we bring Julian Vance into the cold."
