Chapter 6 - Shadows of CarterTech

Nathan sat in his private office on the top floor of the medical facility while Chloe slept soundly on the plush leather couch nearby, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket.

The encrypted USB drive was plugged into Nathan’s private terminal.

Nathan was not just a CEO; he was a master programmer who had built the core security architecture of CarterTech. It took him twenty minutes of intense, focused decryption to bypass the triple-layer security protocol Elena had built into the drive.

When the final wall broke, thousands of internal emails, financial ledgers, and audio files flooded his screen.

As Nathan read through the documents, a terrible, sickening narrative began to take shape.

Five years ago, Nathan’s late wife, Sarah, had been suffering from a rare, genetic vascular complication during her pregnancy. Elena, working in secret alongside Sarah in CarterTech’s bio-tech division, had developed a revolutionary, targeted gene-therapy algorithm designed to cure the condition—a breakthrough that could save Sarah’s life and revolutionize modern medicine.

But Julian Vance—Nathan’s current Vice Chairman, chief business officer, and second-in-command—saw something else: billions of dollars in commercial profits if the algorithm was patented strictly as a broad-spectrum pharmaceutical commercial asset, rather than a non-profit medical treatment.

The documents proved everything.

Julian Vance had intentionally delayed the clinical clearance of Sarah's personalized treatment, deeming it "financially inefficient" to spend resources saving one woman when the master patent could be sold to an international pharmaceutical syndicate for four billion dollars.

Sarah had died in childbirth because the drug she needed was held back by corporate bureaucracy and greed.

When Elena discovered what Julian had done, she confronted him, threatening to go directly to Nathan. In response, Julian framed Elena for embezzlement, fabricated the suicide note, threatened to harm infant Chloe if Elena ever spoke out, and used his street connections to force Elena into hiding, stripping her of her identity, her career, and her life.

For five years, Elena had lived as a ghost on the icy streets of Chicago, hiding in plain sight, protected only by her anonymity, watching over Nathan and Chloe from afar whenever she could—too terrified of Julian’s hitmen to ever approach them.

Until tonight. Until a five-year-old girl walked through a blizzard with a cup of warm soup.

Nathan stared at the glowing monitor, his face pale, his breath slow and rhythmic. The shock had burned away, replaced by an absolute, terrifying cold rage.

"Julian," Nathan whispered to the empty room, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists. "You destroyed my family for a balance sheet."
