Chapter 6 - A Promised Forever

One Year Later

The morning sun shone brightly across the lush green lawns of the Verrone estate on the Upper East Side.

The grand iron gates were decorated with white roses, pastel ribbons, and golden balloons. Laughter and soft Italian music echoed across the stone terrace where a massive seventh-birthday celebration was under way.

Dozens of children from St. Jude’s Academy were running across the lawn, playing games and eating ice cream.

Maya, wearing a bright yellow party dress and a silver crown, was chasing her new golden retriever puppy across the grass, her joyful laughter ringing out under the warm blue sky.

Standing on the terrace, holding a glass of fresh lemonade, was Elena. Her skin glowed with health and peace, her smile radiant as she watched her daughter play.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her gently back against a broad, warm chest.

Elena smiled, leaning back against Damiano. He wore a relaxed white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking handsome, relaxed, and completely at peace.

"Is the birthday princess happy?" Damiano murmured softly into her ear, kissing her cheek.

"She’s been smiling since six in the morning," Elena chuckled warmly, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. "And what about the big, scary mafia boss? Is he happy?"

Damiano laughed—a rich, deep sound that had become a familiar warmth in the estate over the past year.

"I am the happiest man on earth," Damiano admitted softly, looking into Elena’s beautiful brown eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a breathtaking diamond ring that sparkled in the sunlight.

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears of happiness filled her eyes.

"One year ago, Maya walked up to me on the marble floor and asked if she could borrow me as her daddy for one day," Damiano spoke, his voice thick with deep emotion. "She saved my soul, Elena. And you gave me a reason to live again. I don't want to be borrowed anymore. I want to be here for both of you... forever."

"Yes!" Elena sobbed joyfully, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Damiano! A thousand times yes!"

Damiano slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss as the guests on the terrace broke into loud applause and cheers!

Maya came running up the stone steps, her golden puppy bouncing at her heels, looking at her mother and Damiano with giant, sparkling eyes.

"Did Mommy say yes?!" Maya cheered, jumping up and down.

Damiano broke the kiss, smiling down at the little girl who had changed his life forever. He crouched down and lifted Maya up into his arms, pulling Elena close so the three of them were wrapped in one tight, unbreakable family embrace.

"She said yes, Maya," Damiano smiled softly, kissing his daughter's cheek. "I’m your daddy forever now."

Maya wrapped her tiny arms around Damiano’s neck, pressing her soft cheek against his. "I knew it," she giggled happily. "You were always my daddy."

The sun shone brightly over the grand estate, illuminating a home that was no longer filled with blood, coldness, or silence—but with the eternal warmth of love, laughter, and a family restored.
