Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Harbor

The peaceful morning at the school did not last long.

By three o'clock that afternoon, rain returned to the city in heavy torrents. Damiano’s motorcade was escorting Elena and Maya back toward the estate along the elevated coastal highway near the Brooklyn docks.

Suddenly, two heavy industrial dump trucks slammed through the concrete highway barriers from the opposite lane, blocking the road entirely!

"Boss! Trap!" Rafael yelled, slamming on the brakes as the lead SUV smashed into the side of the truck!

From behind, three dark vans skidded into position, blocking their escape route. Dozens of heavily armed men in black tactical gear poured out of the vans, opening fire with automatic weapons!

Bullets pinged violently against the armored glass of Damiano’s vehicle!

"Get down!" Damiano roared, pushing Elena and Maya beneath the leather seats in the rear compartment!

"Mommy!" Maya cried out, covering her ears as the deafening roar of gunfire surrounded them.

"Stay down, baby! Stay with Damiano!" Elena wept, covering her daughter's body with her own.

Damiano pulled a heavy automatic pistol from under his arm rest, his eyes turning into cold, lethal steel. The grief-stricken ghost of the past three years was gone; in his place stood the deadliest Don on the East Coast protecting his family.

"Rafael! Hold the rear line! Call in the team from the west wing!" Damiano commanded over the radio.

"They've jammed the regional comms, Boss!" Rafael reported, firing back through the reinforced driver's window. "It’s the Marchetti family! Lorenzo is leading them personally!"

Through the rain-streaked, bullet-riddled windshield, Damiano saw Lorenzo Marchetti advancing behind three armed men, holding a high-caliber assault rifle, a maniacal grin on his face.

"Verrone!" Lorenzo roared over the sound of rain and gunfire. "Step out of the car and hand over Elena and my son’s stolen bride! Do it now and I might let you die quickly!"

Damiano turned to Elena. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her pale cheek. "Keep her flat on the floor, Elena. Do not look out the window."

"Damiano, please... be careful!" Elena begged, her tears soaking his shirt sleeve.

Damiano gave her a single, resolute nod. He kicked his door open and stepped out into the pouring rain and roaring gunfire.

Using the armored car door as cover, Damiano fired five precise shots, dropping three of Marchetti’s men instantly! His speed and accuracy were terrifying.

Lorenzo’s smile vanished as he scrambled behind a concrete divider. "Kill him! Kill him now!"

Damiano advanced through the smoke and rain like an unstoppable force of nature. He cleared the perimeter with lethal efficiency, stepping over fallen mercenaries as if they were nothing more than debris.

Within three minutes, the remaining attackers fled toward their vans in total panic.

Damiano stepped around the concrete divider, his gun trained directly on Lorenzo Marchetti, who was cowering on the wet asphalt with a bullet wound in his shoulder.

"Damiano... wait! Wait!" Lorenzo pleaded, holding up his hands, his face pale with terror. "It was my father's idea! Don Silvio wanted to use Elena to take control of the Castri territory! Don't do this!"

Damiano stood over him, his face stone cold, rain washing the blood from his suit jacket.

"You threatened my daughter," Damiano said quietly.

"She’s not your daughter!" Lorenzo screamed.

"She is now," Damiano replied.

A single shot echoed across the harbor.
