Chapter 3 - Father's Day at St. Jude's

The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds over Manhattan, painting the brick walls of St. Jude’s Academy in warm gold.
Outside the school gates, wealthy mothers in designer coats and influential fathers in expensive suits gathered in small groups, sipping espresso and showing off their luxury sports cars.
Suddenly, a motorcade of three matte-black SUVs turned the corner, accompanied by two police escort motorcycles. The sleek vehicles pulled up smoothly against the curb in front of the main entrance.
The parents stopped talking, watching in astonishment as four armed guards in dark suits stepped out of the lead and rear vehicles, taking up strategic security positions around the sidewalk.
Rafael Conti stepped up to the middle SUV and pulled open the heavy rear door.
Stepping out onto the pavement was Damiano Verrone. He wore a crisp dark-blue suit, a silk tie, and a tailored overcoat, looking every inch the powerful, commanding titan of New York.
He turned back to the vehicle, reaching his broad hand inside.
Maya stepped out, wearing a beautiful navy-blue velvet dress that Damiano’s personal tailor had delivered to the estate at 5:00 AM, along with shiny black patent-leather shoes and a yellow ribbon in her hair. She looked like a little princess.
Behind her, Elena stepped out, looking stunning yet nervous in a chic beige wool coat, her hand instantly reaching out to adjust Maya's dress.
Maya gripped Damiano’s large index finger with her tiny hand, looking up at him with pure, glowing pride. "Are you ready, Daddy?"
Damiano looked down at the little girl, a rare, genuine smile softening his rugged features. "I'm ready, Maya."
As they walked through the grand archway of the school, whisperings broke out among the gathered parents.
"Is that... Damiano Verrone?!" a politician’s wife whispered behind her hand. "What is he doing here?!"
"Look at the girl! Since when does Verrone have a daughter?!"
In the main auditorium, decorated with colorful paper banners and student artwork, children were sitting at long tables with their fathers.
Sitting near the front row was Lorenzo Marchetti—Silvio’s arrogant, brutal son—sitting beside his seven-year-old boy. Lorenzo’s eyes widened in absolute shock and rage as he saw Damiano walk into the room holding Maya's hand, with Elena walking beside him.
Lorenzo stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back. "Elena...?" he breathed, his fists clenching as he recognized the woman who had abandoned him six years ago.
Maya ignored the stares, pulling Damiano toward the primary stage where her teacher stood holding a microphone.
"Next up," the teacher announced nervously, her eyes wide as she looked at the towering mob boss, "is Maya Rossi... and her father."
Maya climbed the wooden steps onto the stage, pulling Damiano up beside her. She took the microphone with both hands, her small voice echoing clearly across the packed auditorium.
"This is my daddy," Maya declared proudly, her big brown eyes shining. "He lives in a big house, he protects people, and he has the biggest heart in the whole world. And he came here today just for me."
The room remained dead silent for three long seconds.
Then, Damiano reached into his suit jacket, pulled out the crumpled construction paper with the crooked red heart, and held it up for everyone to see.
"This is the most valuable contract I have ever signed," Damiano spoke into the microphone, his powerful voice commanding total reverence. "And I will defend it with my life."
The auditorium erupted into applause. Maya beamed, throwing her arms around Damiano’s waist. Damiano lifted her easily into his arms, kissing her temple as Elena watched from the front row, tears of profound relief streaming down her face.

Standing near the back exit, Lorenzo Marchetti pulled out his phone, his face twisted with pure hatred.
"Father," Lorenzo hissed into the receiver. "I found her. Elena is here in New York... and Damiano Verrone is claiming her bastard child as his own."
