Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The heavy mahogany doors of the east drawing room clicked shut, muffling the chaotic hum of three hundred whispers outside.
Julian stood near the marble fireplace, his hands thrust into his pockets. Opposite him, Camille paced like a caged tiger, her silver dress rustling violently with every frantic step. Her mask of high-society composure was completely shattered.
"Julian, you can't be serious!" Camille hissed, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and embarrassment. "You allowed a domestic—a glorified servant—to throw me to the floor in front of London and New York's elite! My father will destroy the Kingsley Group's European expansion by morning!"
Julian turned slowly. His gaze was icy, stripped of every ounce of affection he had once tried to cultivate for her.
"Your father can try," Julian said, his voice deadly quiet. "But tonight, Camille, you didn't just ruin an engagement gala. You exposed the grotesque cruelty you’ve been hiding behind designer dresses and family money. The engagement is over."
"You're breaking off our marriage... for her?" Camille laughed hysterically, tears smearing her mascara. "She’s a nobody! A glorified bodyguard hiding in a maid’s uniform! Do you really think she's innocent, Julian? Look at her! She lied about her background to get into Kingsley Hall!"
Before Julian could answer, the door opened. Sir Edmund stepped into the room, followed by Vivian. She had removed her apron and white collar, standing straight in her fitted dark dress. Without the domestic accessories, her posture was regal, her eyes sharp and hyper-vigilant—the undeniable aura of an elite operative.
"Grandfather, please," Camille pleaded, turning to the old patriarch. "Explain to your grandson how disastrous this scandal will be for the stock prices tomorrow."
Sir Edmund didn't even glance at her. He walked directly over to Vivian, leaning on his gold-topped cane.
"Miss Ashford," Sir Edmund said, his wise eyes fixed on her face. "Eighteen months ago, your application arrived through a private security firm's quiet placement agency. You came with glowing references from former military contractors and high-profile diplomatic details. My head of security knew exactly who you were when we hired you."
Julian froze, staring at his grandfather. "You knew?"
"I asked for the best close-protection asset in the private sector to guard Kingsley Hall under the guise of house staff," Sir Edmund admitted, a subtle smirk touching his lips. "Julian, you are the heir to a multi-billion-dollar empire. You have enemies. I needed someone inside who could read a room, intercept a threat, and kill an assassin before they reached the front gates. Miss Ashford is the former lead operative of Apex Tactical."
Camille gasped, taking a step back. Even in elite circles, the name Apex Tactical was whispered with fear—a ghost firm that handled anti-terror, billionaire extraction, and intelligence operations for world leaders.
Vivian sighed softly, her secret laid bare. "Sir Edmund, my contract specified complete anonymity. Tonight ruined that."
"Tonight saved my grandson from binding himself to a viper," Sir Edmund corrected gently.
Suddenly, Julian’s chief of staff, James, burst into the room without knocking. His face was pale, his tablet clutched tightly in his trembling hands.
"Mr. Kingsley... Sir Edmund... we have a massive problem," James stuttered. "The video of the incident in the ballroom has gone viral. Over ten million views in forty-five minutes. But that's not all."
James turned the tablet toward them. A major international news outlet was running a breaking story headline:
"KINGSLEY HALL HOUSEKEEPER IDENTIFIED AS MISSING HEIRESS VIVIAN ASHFORD-CROFT, PRESUMED DEAD IN 2022 SYDNEY BOMBING."
The room fell into a suffocating silence.
Julian’s eyes locked onto Vivian, filled with shock and a sudden, painful realization. "Ashford-Croft? As in... Croft International Logistics?"
Vivian closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, slow breath. The quiet life she had spent nearly two years building was officially dead.
"Yes," Vivian said, opening her eyes, her gaze now cold as steel. "My father was Arthur Croft. Three years ago, my stepmother, Lady Eleanor, and her partner framed me for embezzling millions, orchestrated a bombing to liquidate my father's estate, and forced me into hiding. I took the name Ashford to survive."

Camille, realizing the woman she had called "the help" was actually the sole heiress to a global shipping empire worth twice as much as the Winthrop fortune, turned white as a sheet.
"And now," Vivian whispered, looking out the grand window as black SUV headlights flashed near the estate gates, "they know I'm alive."
