Chapter 11 - Shadow of the PastSix months after the breathtaking proposal at the gala, the Reed estate was undergoing its final preparations for the wedding of the century. The private gardens were transformed into a paradise of white roses, glass arches, and twinkling fairy lights.

However, two days before the ceremony, a dark shadow threatened to disturb the peace.
Arya was in the grand living room, helping Sophie fit her flower-girl dress, when Marcus entered the room, his face severe.
"Miss Santos," Marcus said quietly. "Mr. Reed is currently in a high-level meeting with the Home Office. But... there is someone at the front gate requesting to see you specifically."
Arya frowned, setting down the sewing kit. "Who is it, Marcus?"
"It’s Mrs. Harrison's elderly sister, Clara Harrison," Marcus revealed softly. "She drove three hours from Manchester. She says she has something that belonged to your late brother, Leo."
Arya’s heart stopped. "My brother? How could Mrs. Harrison’s sister have something of Leo’s?"
Leaving the children with the house staff, Arya walked down the long grand driveway to the security gates. Standing outside the iron bars was a frail, elderly woman holding an old, battered wooden box.
"Miss Santos?" the elderly woman asked softly, her voice raspy with age and shame.
"Yes," Arya said cautiously. "I'm Arya."
The old woman pressed the wooden box through the bars. "My name is Martha. I am... Evelyn Harrison's sister. When Evelyn was arrested last year, the police raided her old apartment. I was sent to clean out her belongings last week. I found this hidden in the back of her closet."
Arya took the wooden box, her hands trembling.
"Evelyn was a cruel, bitter woman all her life, Miss Santos," Martha wept quietly. "Seven years ago, she worked as a senior administrator at the deaf youth center in East London... the same center where your brother, Leo, spent his final months."
Arya gasped, her blood running cold. "Leo?"
"Evelyn hated deaf children even back then," Martha confessed through tears. "When your brother passed away from his illness, he had left a handwritten wooden journal and a video memory tape for you in his locker. Evelyn stole it because she didn't want the center's director to send it to you. She kept it as a morbid trophy of her hatred."
Martha wiped her eyes, bowing her head in deep shame. "I couldn't live with the guilt of knowing I had it in my house. You deserve to have your brother's last words, Miss Santos. I am so terribly sorry for the pain my sister caused this family."
The old woman turned and slowly walked away into the afternoon fog.
Arya stood at the gate, clutching the heavy wooden box against her chest. She walked back inside the house, her knees shaking, and went straight up to the quiet library.
With trembling fingers, Arya opened the rusted latch of the wooden box. Inside lay a leather-bound journal filled with Leo’s handwriting and BSL drawings, and a small vintage video cassette tape labeled: For My Big Sister, Arya.
Arya burst into tears, holding the journal to her face, smelling the faint, familiar scent of her brother’s old cologne.
Suddenly, Daniel rushed into the library, having just returned from his meeting. "Arya! Marcus told me what happened—are you okay?!"
Arya looked up, tears streaming down her cheeks, but her face was radiating a profound, beautiful light.
"Daniel," Arya sobbed happily. "He left me a message. Leo left me his final words."
Daniel walked over, kneeling beside her chair, wrapping his strong arms around her as she placed the old cassette tape into a converter device on the desk.
The screen lit up with static, then settled on the bright, handsome face of fourteen-year-old Leo Santos, sitting in his room at the youth center seven years ago.
Leo raised his hands on the screen, signing smoothly with a radiant smile:
Hi, Arya. If you're watching this, it means I've gone to sleep for the last time. Don't be sad, big sister. You gave me everything. You learned sign language just so I would never feel alone in the dark. I know you're worried that you won't find love or happiness after I'm gone. But I promise you, Arya... your kindness is a superpower. One day, your hands are going to heal a family that is broken, just like you healed mine. Keep signing. Keep loving. I am always with you.
The video faded to static.
May you like
Arya buried her face in Daniel’s neck, weeping tears of intense healing and closure. The final painful piece of her past had been healed.
Daniel held her tightly, kissing her hair, his own eyes wet with tears. "He knew, Arya," Daniel whispered softly. "Your brother knew you were going to save us."
