Chapter 6 - The Promise on the Lake

An hour later, the cool morning breeze swept across the open park grounds near the edge of Lake Michigan, just a short walk from the hotel.
Ethan and Lily sat together on a wooden park bench facing the peaceful blue water. Between them sat the crystal vase containing the bouquet of red roses, their petals vibrant and alive in the morning sunlight.
Lily sat close to her father, leaning her head against his arm, her small legs swinging back and forth.
“Daddy?” she asked quietly.
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Was Mommy proud of you last night?”
Ethan looked out over the quiet water, the memory of Sarah’s laugh floating through his mind like a warm summer breeze. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, framed photograph of Sarah—smiling in a sunhat during a family trip years ago—and rested it against the base of the crystal vase.
“I think she would be happy that we looked out for people, Lily,” Ethan said softly, wrapping his arm tightly around his daughter. “Your mommy always taught me that no matter how big your life gets, you never forget where you came from, and you never pass by someone who needs help.”
Lily reached out her small hand, gently touching the red petal of one of the roses. “I missed her a lot yesterday on the plane.”
“I know, my baby,” Ethan whispered, kissing her forehead. “I missed her too. But every time I look at you, I see her. She’s right here with us.”
Lily smiled, pressing her face into her father’s shoulder, holding her stuffed bunny tight. “I like Ms. Lupita. She gave me hot chocolate with extra marshmallows before we came outside.”
Ethan chuckled softly, feeling the tight knot of anger and exhaustion that had gripped his chest for days finally dissolve into profound peace. “Ms. Lupita is going to make our hotel a wonderful place, Lily. A place where everyone is welcome.”
The sun rose higher in the Chicago sky, casting golden light across the city skyscrapers and illuminating the red roses on the bench.

Ethan Vance had built an empire of luxury, but as he sat there holding his daughter, listening to the gentle lap of the lake waves against the shore, he knew his greatest accomplishment was not the buildings he owned—it was protecting the kindness, integrity, and love that his wife had left behind in their hearts.
The Grand Regent was restored, the lesson was taught, and as a new day began, Ethan and Lily held onto their memory, ready to face the future together.
