Chapter 4 - The Audit of Souls

The atmosphere in the Grand Ballroom turned ice-cold. The city council members, property developers, and elite investors watched in stunned silence as the unkempt man in the leather jacket dismantled the proudest General Manager in Chicago.

“Mr. Vance…” Harrison gasped, his voice cracking as he reached out a hand in desperation. “That was a misunderstanding by night-shift clerks! They are junior employees! I will terminate them immediately! They don't reflect the values of my management!”

“They reflect your management completely, Richard,” Ethan said, his voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. “Employees do not treat vulnerable people with cruelty unless they know their leadership approves of it. You taught them that human dignity is tied to the brand of a suit or the thickness of a wallet.”

Ethan pulled a thin tablet from the binder and tapped the screen.

“Over the last forty-eight hours, while I was delayed in transit, my corporate audit team pulled the internal reviews, employee turnover rates, and service complaints for this property from the past eighteen months,” Ethan continued. “Housekeeping staff hours cut by thirty percent while executive bonuses increased by forty. Seven complaints of discrimination at the front desk swept under the rug. An entire culture of arrogance built right under my name.”

Harrison was trembling openly now, his tailored tuxedo doing nothing to mask his total humiliation in front of the city’s most powerful figures. “Ethan… please. I built this hotel’s profit margin up by twelve percent this year!”

“You built profits by bankrupting the soul of my company,” Ethan replied fiercely. “And I did not build Vance Hospitality to make arrogant men richer while tired families are turned away into the cold.”

Ethan turned to the two security guards who were still standing by the doors, looking pale and uncertain.

“Escort Mr. Harrison to his office,” Ethan ordered. “He is to pack his personal belongings under supervision. His access to corporate accounts, communications, and hotel property is revoked effective immediately.”

“You can’t fire me on the spot!” Harrison blurted out, panic overwhelming his pride. “I have a contract!”

“Read Clause 14 of your executive contract, Richard,” Ethan said coldly. “Gross moral misconduct and damage to corporate reputation allows for immediate termination without severance. My legal team will have the paperwork on your desk in twenty minutes.”

The guards, realizing who was actually paying their salaries, stepped forward, grabbing Harrison firmly by his arms. The General Manager tried to speak, but no words came out as he was led out of his own gala, past the rows of elite guests who looked away in disgust.

Ethan stepped toward the center of the ballroom, addressing the remaining crowd of stunned attendees.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute authority and calm resolve. “Enjoy your evening. The drinks and meals tonight are entirely on Vance Hospitality. But remember this: the true test of any establishment—and any human being—is not how we treat those who can give us something, but how we treat those who appear to have nothing.”

Without waiting for applause, Ethan turned on his heel and walked out of the ballroom, heading straight for the front desk.
