Chapter 1 - The Glass Tower Shatters

The silence at the front desk was absolute. It stretched across the gleaming Italian marble floor of the lobby like a sheet of ice, heavy and suffocating.

Patricia’s fingers hovered frozen above the illuminated mechanical keyboard. The bright blue backlight of the terminal cast a ghostly glow against her suddenly pale cheeks. On the monitor, highlighted in bright yellow text at the top of the executive override tab, were the booking details:

RESERVATION CONFIRMATION: #EX-009182

GUEST: ETHAN VANCE (FOUNDER & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, VANCE HOSPITALITY GROUP)

ROOM: PRESIDENTIAL PENTHOUSE SUITE 904

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: DIRECT CORPORATE OVERRIDE. DO NOT DISTURB / NO PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS. VIP AUTONOMY LEVEL 1.

Beside her, Karla leaned over, her smug grin vanishing instantly as her eyes scanned the text. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The mocking laughter that had filled her throat just seconds ago turned into a dry, choking gasp.

“Sir…” Patricia’s voice trembled, all the rehearsed polish and haughty superiority completely stripped away. “I… I apologize. The system was hidden behind the secondary corporate firewall. We… we didn’t realize—”

“You didn’t realize who I was,” Ethan corrected her quietly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his fist on the desk. His tone was as smooth and cold as polished stone, which made it infinitely more terrifying. “Because if I had been an ordinary father who couldn't afford a five-hundred-dollar room, leaving me out in the cold with a sleeping child would have been completely acceptable to you.”

Karla tried to step forward, her hands trembling as she smoothed down her beige blazer. “Mr. Vance… please. It’s been an extraordinarily busy night with the corporate gala in the ballroom. We were just trying to manage lobby traffic and—”

“Lobby traffic?” Ethan looked Karla straight in the eye. “A customer standing at a desk with a sleeping child is not 'traffic.' They are a human being seeking hospitality. That is the fundamental reason this building exists.”

Lupita stood a few paces back, her hands folded neatly over her maroon housekeeping apron. She looked between the two terrified clerks and the weary man holding the sleeping girl, her eyes widening slightly as the full weight of Ethan’s identity registered. Yet, her composure remained steady. She didn't bow or scramble for favor; she simply maintained the quiet dignity she had shown from the start.

Ethan turned his gaze to Lupita. The sharp edge in his eyes softened immediately.

“Lupita,” he said gently.

“Yes, Mr. Vance?” she replied respectfully.

“Thank you for stepping up when it wasn't your job,” Ethan said. “Would you mind assisting me to Suite 904? My daughter’s arms are getting cold, and I’d like to lay her down.”

“It would be my honor, sir,” Lupita said softly. She immediately stepped around the counter, reaching out to gently take the heavy backpack from Ethan’s shoulder so he wouldn't have to carry both the bag and his daughter.

Patricia frantically grabbed a key card from the drawer, her hands shaking so violently she dropped it twice onto the marble desk before sliding it across to Ethan. “Mr. Vance, key card for the private elevator to the ninth floor! Please, let me call the general manager right now to welcome you—”

“Do not call Mr. Harrison just yet,” Ethan interrupted, taking the key card without looking at her. “I will address Mr. Harrison in my own time. For now, you two will remain at this desk and fulfill your shifts. We will have a very thorough discussion tomorrow morning.”

Without another word, Ethan adjusted Lily in his arms, held the red roses carefully in his hand, and walked toward the private elevator bank, with Lupita following a step behind.

Behind them, Patricia collapsed into her leather chair, burying her face in her hands, while Karla stared at the elevator doors in horror, realizing that the comfortable career she had taken for granted was hanging by a single, fraying thread.
