Chapter 5 - Dawn of Reckoning

At 6:30 AM the following morning, the golden rays of the sunrise broke over Lake Michigan, streaming through the arched glass windows of the Grand Regent lobby.
The lobby was spotlessly clean, but the energy in the air was electric with tension. Word of the CEO’s surprise arrival and the instantaneous firing of the General Manager had spread through the employee night shifts like wildfire.
Behind the front desk stood Patricia and Karla. Neither of them had slept a wink. Their eyes were bloodshot, their makeup slightly faded, and they stood stiff as boards, staring at the floor as footsteps approached from the executive elevator.
Ethan walked into the lobby. He had showered, shaved, and changed into a clean dark sweater and dark trousers, though he still wore a simple silver watch and no flashy jewelry. Beside him walked Lily, holding her worn stuffed bunny in one hand and clutching Ethan’s fingers with the other. Her little eyes were bright, refreshed, and filled with wonder as she looked at the tall marble columns.
Behind them walked Lupita, dressed in a sharp, brand-new navy supervisor blazer, holding a tablet containing the morning staff roster.
Ethan stopped in front of the desk.
Patricia looked up, her lips trembling, tears brimming in her eyes. “Mr. Vance… we… we don't know what to say. We are so deeply ashamed.”
Karla bowed her head, her voice barely a whisper. “Please, Mr. Vance. Don't ruin our careers. We were just following the guidelines Mr. Harrison set for desk appearances.”
Ethan looked at the two young women for a long moment. Lily tugged gently on his coat.
“Daddy,” Lily whispered softly, looking at Patricia’s tear-stained face. “Is the lady sad?”
Ethan looked down at his daughter, then back at the clerks.
“I am not going to blackball you from the industry,” Ethan said slowly.
Patricia and Karla gasped, looking up in shock.
“However,” Ethan continued, his voice firm and unyielding, “you will no longer work at the front desk of any Vance Hospitality property. Your roles as guest-facing representatives are terminated today.”
Karla closed her eyes tightly, nodding acceptingly.
“If you wish to remain employed by this company,” Ethan said, “you will both be reassigned to the internal operations and laundry division for six months, starting Monday. You will work alongside the housekeeping staff. You will learn what it means to serve people from the ground up. You will learn the hard work, dignity, and humility that keeps this hotel standing. If you complete those six months with genuine humility and good performance, you will be given a second chance at a junior desk position elsewhere. If you decline, your resignations will be accepted today.”
Patricia wiped a tear from her cheek and nodded frantically. “I’ll take it. Thank you, Mr. Vance. Thank you for giving us a chance to learn.”
“I’ll take it too,” Karla said softly, looking genuinely humbled. “I’m sorry, sir. Truly.”
Ethan nodded once. He then turned to Lupita.
“Lupita,” Ethan said warmly.
“Yes, Mr. Vance?”
“Effective immediately, you are appointed as the interim Director of Guest Relations for the Grand Regent Chicago,” Ethan announced. “You will oversee front-desk training, staff culture, and community hospitality programs. Your salary will reflect executive management rates, and you will have full authority to restructure shift policies to ensure every employee is treated fairly.”
Lupita’s eyes filled with tears, but her posture remained proud and regal. “Mr. Vance… I am just a housekeeper.”
May you like
“No, Lupita,” Ethan said gently, placing a hand on her shoulder. “You are the heart of this hotel. You were the only person in this lobby last night who remembered what real hospitality means. This hotel needs you.”
Lupita smiled, stepping forward to gently pat Lily’s shoulder. “I will make you proud, Mr. Vance. And I will make Mrs. Vance proud.”
