Chapter 4 - THE PROMISE AT THE ALTAR

By Saturday afternoon, a crisp autumn sunshine broke through the gray clouds, bathing the rolling fields of the Carter farm in a warm, golden light.

The backyard had been transformed into a simple, beautiful wedding setting. White wooden chairs lined the grassy lawn, leading to a cedar archway draped in white linen and wild roses. Over fifty local townspeople, relatives, and neighbors had gathered, filling the air with soft chatter and laughter.

Inside the house, the atmosphere was a mix of joyful anticipation and solemn reverence.

In the downstairs bedroom, Margaret Carter sat in a comfortable armchair, dressed in a soft powder-blue dress. Her cheeks were lightly flushed with makeup that Sophia had carefully applied, and a matching silk shawl rested over her shoulders. She looked tired, but her eyes shone with a profound, radiant happiness.

"You look beautiful, Mama," Sophia whispered, pinning a corsage of white jasmine onto her mother's dress.

"Not as beautiful as you, my sweet girl," Margaret smiled softly, reaching up to gently touch Sophia's face.

Sophia wore a simple, elegant knee-length burgundy dress that highlighted her soft curves and deep brown eyes. Standing beside her was Lily, who wore a tiny white flower-girl dress, proudly holding a basket of yellow rose petals.

The wooden door opened, and Dominic stepped inside.

He wore a tailored charcoal-gray three-piece tuxedo with a dark silk tie. He looked so devastatingly handsome, so commanding, that Sophia's breath hitched in her chest.

"It's time," Dominic said softly, his eyes locking onto Sophia with an intensity that made her skin tingle.

Dominic walked over to Margaret's chair, bending down smoothly to scoop the frail woman up into his arms with absolute care, as if she were made of precious glass. Margaret chuckled weakly, resting her head against his broad shoulder.

"You're a good man, Dominic," Margaret whispered in his ear as he carried her toward the back porch. "I know who you are. I saw the news... I saw your face on the financial magazines last year."

Dominic stopped in his tracks near the porch doors, looking down at the frail woman in his arms. "And you aren't afraid?"

"A mother knows when a man's heart is dark, and when it's just guarded," Margaret smiled softly. "You love my daughter. You might not have admitted it to yourself yet... but you love her. Promise me you'll keep her safe when I'm gone."

Dominic looked back through the glass door at Sophia, who was helping Lily straighten her hair ribbon.

"On my life, Margaret," Dominic said, his voice deep and solemn. "I will protect them with everything I own."

Ten minutes later, the acoustic guitar music floated through the crisp air.

Emma walked down the grassy aisle, glowing with radiant happiness, holding the arm of her high school sweetheart, Tommy. The local minister stood under the cedar archway, his voice carrying warmth and blessings across the quiet farm.

Dominic sat in the front row, holding Lily on his lap. Lily leaned against his chest, happily chewing on a small piece of wedding cake decoration, completely content in the arms of the man the entire underworld feared.

Beside Dominic sat Sophia, her hand resting gently on her mother's knee. Margaret held her husband Henry's hand on one side, and Sophia's on the other, her face illuminated by pure, unadulterated peace.

When the minister pronounced Emma and Tommy husband and wife, the crowd broke into warm applause.

As everyone stood up to congratulate the newlyweds, Margaret suddenly let out a soft, long breath. Her grip on Sophia's hand relaxed gently. Her head tipped softly against Henry's shoulder, a beautiful, peaceful smile fixed upon her face.

Sophia froze. "Mama?"

Henry turned, his face turning deathly pale. "Margaret... Margaret, honey?"

Dominic instantly stepped forward, setting Lily down with Marcus and reaching out to check Margaret's pulse at her wrist. He gently closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against the dying woman's hand.

"She's gone," Dominic whispered softly, his voice thick with emotion. "She passed in peace... watching her family."

A sorrowful, heartbreaking sob escaped Sophia's throat as she collapsed against her mother's chest, weeping bitterly. Henry fell to his knees beside his wife, burying his face in her lap, his broad shoulders shaking violently with silent, agonizing grief.

Dominic stepped back, standing as a silent, unyielding sentinel behind Sophia. He reached down, wrapping his large, warm hand over her trembling shoulder, pulling her gently against his side to share her heavy burden.

As the afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, casting deep violet shadows across the farm, Dominic looked up at the quiet Pennsylvania sky.

The promise had been made. The empire was about to change forever.
