Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

Henry Carter stared at Dominic's offered hand for three agonizing seconds before slowly extending his own calloused, dirt-stained hand. The handshake was brief, hard, and tested the strength of both men. Neither yielded an inch.

"Moretti," Henry repeated, his eyebrows pulling together in a heavy scowl. "Sounds like a city name. What kind of business are you in, Mr. Moretti?"

"Logistics and asset management," Dominic replied smoothly, his tone calm, polished, and completely unbothered by Henry's hostile demeanor. "I run a firm based out of Manhattan."

Henry let out a short, skeptical grunt. "A city man. Figures." He stepped aside, gesturing curtly toward the dim hallway. "Get inside before the cold gets into the house. Your mother's resting upstairs, Sophia. She's had a rough morning."

Sophia felt a lump form in her throat as she stepped past her father into the house she had grown up in. The smell of cinnamon, old oak furniture, and antiseptic medicine filled her lungs—a heartbreaking reminder of her mother's fading life.

From the top of the stairs, a young woman with long dark hair came running down, her eyes bright with tears. "Soph!"

"Emma!" Sophia dropped her bag and caught her younger sister in a tight embrace.

"I'm so glad you're here," Emma sobbed quietly, holding her sister tight before pulling back to look at Lily. "Look at how big you've gotten, sweet girl!"

"Aunt Emma!" Lily squeaked from Dominic's arms, reaching out for her aunt.

Emma took Lily into her arms, but her eyes instantly widened as she looked at the tall, strikingly handsome man standing beside her sister. The custom suit, the immaculate grooming, the quiet aura of absolute power radiating from Dominic was impossible to ignore.

"You must be Dominic," Emma breathed, a sudden, nervous flush rising on her cheeks. "Sophia told us... well, she said you might be coming."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Emma," Dominic said, offering a courteous incline of his head. "And congratulations on your wedding."

"Thank you," Emma stammered, clearly awed by his presence.

"Where is Mama?" Sophia asked, her voice tight with rising anxiety.

"She's upstairs in the master bedroom," Emma said softly, her expression falling into deep sadness. "She’s been asking for you every ten minutes."

Sophia didn't wait. She turned and hurried up the narrow wooden stairs, her heart pounding in her ears. Dominic followed closely behind her, his heavy footsteps quiet and deliberate on the floorboards.

At the end of the upstairs hallway, a door stood half-open.

Sophia pushed it open gently. The room was dark, lit only by a single bedside lamp. In the center of the large four-poster bed lay Margaret Carter.

Sophia let out a soft, broken gasp, covering her mouth with her hand.

The vibrant, strong woman who had raised four children and managed a fifty-acre farm was almost unrecognizable. Margaret was impossibly thin, her skin pale and translucent, a soft silk scarf covering her bald head. Her breathing was shallow and fragile.

"Mama?" Sophia whispered, stepping toward the bed.

Margaret's eyes slowly fluttered open. A faint, radiant smile touched her chapped lips the moment she recognized her eldest daughter. "Sophia... my sweet girl..."

Sophia dropped to her knees beside the bed, grasping her mother's frail, cold hands and pressing them against her cheek, tears spilling down her face. "I'm here, Mama. I'm right here."

"I knew you'd come," Margaret whispered, her voice like rustling dry leaves. She raised her weak hand to touch Sophia's hair. "Look at you... you look so tired, baby."

"I'm fine, Mama," Sophia sobbed. "I brought the recipe book. We're going to make Emma's cake together, just like you wanted."

Margaret's weak gaze drifted past Sophia's shoulder toward the doorway, where Dominic stood in the shadows, his expression unreadable, his arms folded across his chest.

"And who... who is that handsome man?" Margaret asked, a faint spark of her old playful warmth returning to her eyes.

Sophia froze. She looked back at Dominic, panic flashing in her brown eyes.

Before Sophia could speak, Dominic stepped out of the shadows. He walked slowly to the side of the bed and dropped to one knee beside Sophia, lowering his imposing height until he was eye-level with the dying woman.

He reached out, gently wrapping his hand over Margaret's fragile fingers.

"I'm Dominic, Mrs. Carter," he said softly, his voice echoing with a profound, deep reverence. "I'm the man who loves your daughter. And I promise you... she will never be alone again."

Margaret stared into Dominic's eyes for a long, quiet moment. In those blue-gray eyes, she didn't see a billionaire, nor did she see a dangerous mafia boss. She saw a protector. A man whose word was absolute iron.

Tears welled in Margaret's weak eyes, slipping down her pale cheeks. She squeezed Dominic's hand with every ounce of remaining strength in her frail body.

"Thank you, Dominic," Margaret whispered, her chest heaving. "Thank you for taking care of my girl."

Downstairs, the front door slammed open with a loud, aggressive bang.

"Henry!" a rough, arrogant voice yelled from the foyer. "Where's that pretty daughter of yours? I heard she brought some city slicker home to crash my family's town!"

Sophia's face drained of all color.

May you like

"Who is that?" Dominic asked, his tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

"It's Carter Vance," Sophia whispered, horror etched across her face. "The mayor's son... the man who tried to force me to marry him before I ran away to New York."
