Chapter 1 - THE DRIVE TO ASHVILLE

Dominic didn't answer her question right away. He reached into the inner pocket of his vest, pulled out the folded piece of paper Lily had dropped in the foyer, and smoothed it carefully across the marble counter.

The three stick figures stared up at them under the crooked yellow sun.

"Because a little girl walked up to a man who commands three thousand men and asked him to protect her mother," Dominic said softly, his deep voice carrying a strange, immovable weight. "And in my world, Sophia, when a child asks for protection, you don't turn her away."

Sophia stared at him, her chest heaving as she looked from the drawing back to the formidable billionaire seated in her kitchen. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She knew the rumors surrounding Dominic Moretti—that he was a man who owned half of Manhattan's shipping lanes, a man whose silence was more dangerous than an army, a man who had never let a single person past his velvet ropes.

Yet here he was, offering to drive three hours into rural Pennsylvania to play the part of a devoted partner for a dying woman.

"If my father finds out who you really are..." Sophia whispered, her voice trembling.

"He won't," Dominic replied, his blue-gray eyes locking onto hers with unwavering certainty. "To your father, to your family, and to the people in Ashville, I am simply Dominic. A man who runs an international logistics firm. A man who loves you."

The breath caught in her throat at his final words. A man who loves you.

Two hours later, a sleek, unmarked dark navy SUV pulled out of the private underground garage of the Manhattan estate. Marcus, Dominic's trusted right-hand man and security director, sat in the driver's seat, his face set in a stern, silent mask. But the atmosphere inside the leather-scented cabin was thick with an unsaid tension.

In the back seat, Lily sat tucked into her child seat, clutching Mr. Whiskers tightly against her chest, staring out the rain-streaked window at the blurring city lights. Sophia sat beside Dominic, her fingers tightly intertwined in her lap.

"Are we going to Grandma's house now?" Lily asked, her small voice breaking the heavy silence.

Dominic turned his head toward the little girl. The harshness that usually defined his structured features softened completely. "Yes, Lily. We're going to see your grandma."

"Did you bring your suit, Mr. Dominic?" Lily asked innocently. "Mommy said weddings are for pretty dresses and suits."

A ghost of a smile touched Dominic's lips—a rare, mesmerizing sight that made Sophia’s pulse skip a beat. "I brought my best suit, little one."

Sophia looked away, her cheeks burning as she stared out into the gathering gloom of the Pennsylvania highway. "You don't have to do this, Dominic. We can still turn back. I can tell them you had an emergency at work."

Dominic reached across the space between them. His broad, warm hand covered her trembling fingers, grounding her instantly. "We aren't turning back, Sophia. I promised your daughter. And a Moretti never breaks a promise."

As the concrete skyscraper jungle of New York gave way to the rolling, oak-lined hills of rural Pennsylvania, the air grew colder and thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. Ashville was a small town where time seemed to have stopped thirty years ago—a town of gravel roads, weathered red barns, and families who had lived on the same soil for generations.

The SUV pulled off the main highway onto a narrow, bumpy dirt lane bordered by leaning wooden fence posts. At the end of the lane stood the Carter farm—a two-story white farmhouse with a wraarded porch, its paint peeling slightly around the window frames. Warm yellow light spilled from the living room windows into the darkening afternoon fog.

"This is it," Sophia breathed, her throat feeling like sandpaper.

Marcus brought the vehicle to a smooth stop near the gravel driveway. He adjusted his coat, looking at Dominic through the rearview mirror. "Boss... Marco Bellini called three times while we were on the bridge. The union negotiations in Brooklyn are heating up. He knows you left the city."

Dominic's eyes narrowed into slits of cold steel. "Let Bellini wait. If he steps one inch out of line, tell his brother I'll personally audit his docks on Monday."

"Understood, sir," Marcus nodded.

Dominic unlocked his door and stepped out into the crisp country air, buttoning his tailored dark overcoat. He walked around to Sophia's side, opening the door for her and offering his hand.

Sophia hesitated for a fraction of a second before placing her hand in his. His grip was firm, solid, and overwhelmingly warm.

He reached into the back, easily lifting Lily out of her car seat with one arm. Lily giggled, wrapping her arms around his neck without a second thought, resting her head against his broad shoulder as if she had known him her entire life.

"Ready?" Dominic asked, looking down at Sophia.

Sophia took a deep breath, clutching her mother's worn velvet recipe book against her chest. "Ready."

They walked up the wooden porch steps together. Before Sophia could even lift her hand to knock, the heavy oak front door swung open.

Standing in the doorway was Henry Carter.

He was a tall, broad-shouldered man in his late fifties, with graying hair, weathered skin, and eyes as sharp and unforgiving as iron. He wore a flannel shirt rolled up at the sleeves and mud-stained work boots. His gaze swept over Sophia, lingered on Lily clinging to the tall stranger, and finally landed heavily on Dominic.

The silence on the porch stretched so tight it felt as though a single breath would snap it.

"Sophia," Henry said, his voice deep and rough like grinding stones. "You made it."

"Dad," Sophia replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

Henry didn't offer a hug. His eyes shifted back to Dominic, measuring the six-foot-two man standing in bespoke Italian leather on his front porch. "And who might you be?"

May you like

Dominic stepped forward, extending his free hand with absolute authority, his gaze never flinching from Henry's intimidating stare.

"Dominic Moretti," he said clearly. "I'm Sophia's partner."
