Chapter 8 - The Fall of Dante Moretti

The Romano estate’s basement level was a labyrinth of reinforced concrete, dim incandescent lighting, and absolute silence. Down here, the outside world did not exist.

Alessandro walked down the corridor flanked by two armed guards, his footsteps echoing rhythmically off the stone walls. They stopped in front of Cell 4.

Dante Moretti sat on a metal bench inside the cell, his once-impeccable tailored suit rumpled, his hair disheveled, and a nasty bruise forming along his jawline from his capture. When he saw Alessandro approach the iron bars, he stood up quickly, gripping the vertical bars with both hands.

"Alessandro," Moretti sneered, a desperate, mocking laugh escaping his lips. "I have to hand it to you. You always managed to land on your feet. How did you know? My network was airtight."

Alessandro stopped two paces from the cell, his hands clasped behind his back, looking down at his rival with absolute detachment.

"Your network wasn't airtight, Dante," Alessandro replied smoothly. "Your fatal flaw was the same flaw every arrogant strategist makes: you underestimated the people you deemed invisible."

Moretti frowned, his brow furrowing. "What are you talking about?"

"A six-year-old child," Alessandro said simply. "The daughter of a maid. While you and my fiancée were drawing up high-level corporate diagrams and smuggling botanical toxins, you forgot that children notice everything. She saw Isabella tamper with the food. She had more courage at six years old than you've had in your entire pathetic career."

Moretti’s face paled, the sneer vanishing entirely, replaced by a sudden, sickening realization. "A kid... I lost an empire because of a brat?"

"You lost an empire because you lacked honor, vision, and intelligence," Alessandro corrected sharply. "You thought you could buy my life and my legacy. But men like you don't build empires, Dante. You scavenge in the ruins of men who do."

Moretti lunged forward against the bars, his face twisting with rage. "You think you've won, Romano?! My associates in the syndicate council won't let you hold the eastern docks! They'll come for you! They'll burn this estate to the ground!"

Alessandro didn't even flinch. He simply turned his head slightly toward Marco.

"Leave him in the dark for forty-eight hours with no food and no water," Alessandro instructed quietly. "Then transfer him to the federal marshals on anonymous tips regarding his offshore tax evasion and racketeering indictments. Let the law finish what we started."

"Understood, boss," Marco nodded.

As Alessandro turned and began walking back down the corridor, Moretti’s furious screams echoed off the concrete walls, fading into the distance until there was only the quiet hum of the ventilation system.
