Chapter 6 - The Confession of a Pawn

The holding room in the north wing was soundproof, windowless, and chilled to a sharp, uncomfortable temperature. Isabella sat at a small steel table in the center of the room, her elegant silk dress looking out of place in the sterile environment. Her hair was slightly disheveled, the immaculate chignon coming undone at the edges.
When the heavy steel door unlocked and swung open, Isabella didn't look up immediately. She assumed it was Marco coming with more interrogation questions.
"I have nothing more to say to your thugs, Alessandro," she muttered, her voice brittle and laced with defiant exhaustion. "If you're going to kill me, get it over with. But know that Dante will come for this estate. He won't let my death go unpunished."
"Dante Moretti isn't coming for anything," a cold, smooth voice replied from the doorway.
Isabella flinched, her head snapping up.
Alessandro stepped into the room. He didn't rush. He walked with the measured, predatory grace of an apex predator closing in on wounded prey. He pulled out the chair opposite her, sat down, and folded his hands on the steel table.
"What do you mean?" Isabella asked, her voice cracking slightly despite her best efforts to maintain composure. "Dante has the eastern docks. He has the political connections—"
"Dante Moretti had a lot of things forty minutes ago," Alessandro interrupted calmly. "Before Marco and my strike team breached his primary warehouse, seized his ledgers, and locked him in the back of an armored van."
Isabella’s face drained of every remaining trace of color. Her jaw dropped open in silent horror. "No... that's impossible. We had an agreement. The timing wasn't supposed to be—"
"An agreement between thieves rarely survives contact with reality, Isabella," Alessandro said, leaning forward. "You thought you were playing a masterstroke. You thought you could trade my empire for a front-row seat at Moretti's side, playing the wealthy queen of the eastern syndicate."
Isabella’s bravado finally cracked completely. She lunged forward across the table, her hands slamming against the steel surface, tears spilling over her mascara-stained cheeks.
"You don't understand what it's like!" she sobbed, her voice breaking into a hysterical register. "Living in this fortress! Being treated like a prized possession, a decorative ornament on your arm while you discuss bloodshed and death in every corner of this house! I wanted out! I wanted a life where I wasn't just a shadow in a mafia boss's world!"
"Then you should have packed a bag and walked out the front gates," Alessandro replied, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute stillness. "I would have given you a severance package large enough to live like a queen anywhere in the world. You could have had all the freedom you wanted."
Isabella froze. She stared at him, realizing the absolute truth in his words. Alessandro was ruthless to his enemies, but he was fiercely honorable to those within his household. If she had asked to leave, he would have let her go. Her greed, her arrogance, and her desire for total destruction had blinded her to the reality of her own golden cage.
"But you didn't just want freedom," Alessandro continued, standing up slowly, towering over her trembling frame. "You wanted my blood. And worse... you agreed to spill the blood of an innocent six-year-old child."
Isabella recoiled, her back hitting the cold wall behind her chair. "She... she was just a maid's daughter—"
"She is a human being," Alessandro barked, his voice ringing like a gunshot through the small room, "who possessed more integrity, more courage, and more soul in her little finger than you ever had in your entire body."

Alessandro turned away, walking toward the heavy steel door without looking back.
"Lock her in the basement holding cells," Alessandro instructed Marco over his comm-link as he stepped out into the hallway. "When Moretti is brought in, put them in adjacent cells. Let them talk about their glorious partnership."
