Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Vault

The heavy oak doors of Alessandro’s private underground study clicked shut with a solid, airtight seal. This room was the nerve center of the Romano empire—a windowless sanctuary lined with reinforced concrete and shielded from electronic surveillance. Here, the true business of the syndicate was conducted.

Alessandro stood before his massive mahogany desk, his face carved from stone. Standing across from him were two men: Marco, his head of security and most fiercely loyal lieutenant, and Viktor, his veteran financial advisor.

"Isabella is locked in the north wing holding room," Marco reported, his voice crisp and military. "Guarded by four men. No one in, no one out. Her personal phone and laptop were seized before she could wipe them."

"Good," Alessandro said, his voice cold as winter ice. "Unlock her digital footprint. Every encrypted folder, every offshore communication, every financial transaction from the last twelve months. I want to know where the money came from and where it was going."

Viktor immediately stepped forward, placing a sleek encrypted tablet onto the desk. He hooked it up to the room's main terminal. "We didn't even need to crack much, boss. Her operational security was sloppy because she believed she had already won. We accessed her cloud storage through a master backup key she foolishly linked to her personal tablet."

Viktor tapped the screen, and a cascade of data windows popped up on the massive wall-mounted monitors.

Columns of numbers, encrypted chat logs, and financial spreadsheets filled the display. Alessandro stepped closer, his dark eyes scanning the glowing text. What he uncovered next was far worse than simple poison.

"Look here, sir," Viktor pointed to a highlighted folder labeled Restructure_2026. "It's not just an inheritance grab. She wasn't just planning to inherit your estate—she was liquidating it. Over the past eight months, small, systematic transfers have been siphoning millions out of the primary syndicate accounts into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands."

Marco leaned in, his brow furrowing deeply. "A shell company? Who's the primary beneficiary?"

Viktor scrolled down, clicking open a scanned PDF document—a corporate registry certificate. The name on the document made the air in the room drop ten degrees.

Consolidated Logistics Corp.

And beneath it, listed as the managing director and primary shareholder: Dante Moretti.

Alessandro’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. Dante Moretti. His own primary rival syndicate leader from the neighboring eastern territory—a man Alessandro had sparred with in business and blood for over five years. Moretti had tried twice to muscle in on the Romano shipping docks and failed every time. Now, he hadn't tried to conquer the empire with guns; he had bought it from the inside out using Isabella as his Trojan horse.

"Moretti," Alessandro growled, the name tasting like ash and iron in his mouth. "She sold us out to the eastern syndicate."

"It gets worse, boss," Viktor said, his voice dropping solemnly as he opened another file. "There's an insurance policy. A massive, high-value life insurance policy taken out six months ago, naming Isabella as the sole primary beneficiary, with a secondary payout clause routing straight to an overseas trust managed by Moretti’s legal front."

Alessandro stared at the screen, the full panoramic scope of the conspiracy laying bare before him. Isabella wasn't just a disgruntled lover; she was an operative, a pawn in a much larger chess match designed to dismantle the Romano legacy piece by piece, leaving him dead and his empire carved up between a treacherous fiancée and a ruthless rival.

"Marco," Alessandro said, his voice dangerously quiet.

"Sir?"

"Mobilize the strike teams. I want Moretti’s primary warehouse on the docks surrounded within the hour. No communications in, no communications out. We are going to pay our dear friend Dante a visit."

"And the fiancée?" Marco asked.

Alessandro turned away from the monitors, his eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving light. "Isabella stays locked up. But before we deal with Moretti, there is something else we need to address. Something far more unforgivable than what she planned for me."
