Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesThe preliminary custody and asset hearing took place at the County Superior Courthouse four weeks after my delivery.

The gallery was packed with reporters, media cameras, and corporate observers. The story of the "Secret Billionaire Heiress and the Betraying Husband" had leaked to the press, creating a national media circus.
Dominic sat at the defense table wearing an expensive new suit, trying to look composed. Beside him sat his sleazy high-profile lawyer, Arthur Gold, and Natalie, who was dressed in a conservative beige dress designed to make her look like an innocent young mother.
Dominic smirked at me as I walked down the center aisle.
I didn't look like the broken, pale woman in the wheelchair from the NICU. I wore a tailored black double-breasted suit, my hair swept up in a flawless chignon, surrounded by a wall of high-powered Sterling Group attorneys. Behind me sat Charles Sterling, and beside him sat Dr. Julian Vance, who had volunteered to testify as an expert witness regarding the children's health.
Judge Margaret Ellison pounded her gavel, bringing the courtroom to order.
"We are here today to address the emergency petition filed by Mr. Dominic Vance regarding asset division, corporate damages, and temporary custody of the infant twins, Liam and Chloe Sterling-Vance," Judge Ellison stated sternly. "Mr. Gold, you may present your motion."
Arthur Gold stood up dramatically, adjusting his button-down shirt.
"Your Honor! My client, Dominic Vance, was the victim of an elaborate, cruel deception," Gold boomed. "For three years, his wife, Audrey Sterling, feigned poverty, allowing my client to bear the entire financial burden of their household. When she delivered their children prematurely, she used her family's immense wealth and institutional power at Saint Aurelia Medical Center to intimidate my client, ruin his business, and unlawfully seize his marital assets!"
Gold pointed an accusing finger at me. "She is emotionally unstable, cold-hearted, and unfit to raise these fragile infants!"
Dominic nodded solemnly, putting on a show of grief for the judges and cameras.
"Is that all, Mr. Gold?" Judge Ellison asked dryly. She turned her eyes to my lead counsel. "Ms. Reynolds, your response?"
Victoria Reynolds stood up slowly, picking up a single tablet connected to the courtroom's large digital display screens.
"Your Honor, Mr. Gold’s narrative is a pathetic fairy tale," Victoria said calmly. "First, regarding the claim that Mr. Vance bore the 'financial burden' of the marriage..."
Victoria tapped the screen. A series of bank statements appeared in high definition on the wall monitors.
"Over the course of three years, Mrs. Audrey Sterling transferred a total of $4.2 million from her personal trust into the joint account," Victoria revealed. "Mr. Vance did not support my client; my client secretly funded Mr. Vance's company, Apex Medical, from day one. And four hours after Mrs. Sterling was rushed into emergency surgery for her life-threatening delivery, Mr. Vance unlawfully liquidated that entire $4.2 million, transferring it into offshore accounts registered in his name."
Gasps echoed through the gallery. Dominic's jaw dropped.
"That's... that was marital property!" Dominic blurted out, jumping out of his seat.
"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" Judge Ellison barked.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Victoria continued smoothly, "we have submitted certified medical affidavits signed by Chief Neonatologist Dr. Julian Vance. On the morning of November 12th, Mr. Vance entered the NICU, verbally abused my client while she was recovering from major surgery, and explicitly declared on video—which we have recorded via hospital security—that he was abandoning the children and that Audrey was 'on her own'."
Victoria pressed play on the tablet. Dominic's own cruel voice echoed through the courtroom speakers: “You and those babies are on your own. You should probably call a shelter.”
The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs. Dominic turned ghost white. Natalie shrank back in her chair, trying to hide her face from the cameras.
"Now, let us address the matter of the pregnant mistress sitting beside him," Victoria said, her voice turning sharp as a razor. "Mr. Vance claims he left my client to start a 'legitimate family' with Ms. Natalie Reed. However, we performed a simple court-ordered paternity subpoena on Ms. Reed's prenatal records."
Natalie gasped, her eyes flying open in terror. "Dominic, stop her!"

Victoria pulled up a DNA analysis document on the screen.
"The father of Ms. Reed's unborn child is not Dominic Vance," Victoria declared loudly. "The biological father is Mr. Richard Vance—Dominic's uncle and business partner, who paid Ms. Reed $200,000 to seduce Dominic and siphon Sterling corporate secrets from his company!"
