Chapter 2 - The Stripping of a Scoundrel"G-Granddaughter?" Natalie stammered, her face turning pale as she clutched Dominic's arm. "Dominic, you said she was an orphan! You said her family was dirt poor!"

"She... she told me she had a small family trust!" Dominic gasped, sweat now glistening on his forehead. He turned to me, his voice pitching higher in panic. "Audrey, what is the meaning of this?! Why didn't you tell me Charles Sterling was your grandfather?!"

"Because three years ago, when you proposed," I replied calmly, "my grandfather asked me to test your heart. He told me that if a man loves you for who you are, he will stay when he thinks you have nothing. But if he loves you for what you own, he will reveal his true nature the moment he thinks you are vulnerable."

I looked at the divorce papers sitting under Dominic's arm.

"You passed the test, Dominic. You showed me exactly who you are."

Charles Sterling raised his hand, gesturing to the Chief of Medicine. "Dr. Harrison."

"Yes, Mr. Sterling!" the doctor blurted out, stepping forward immediately.

"Effective this second, terminate all existing contracts between the Sterling Healthcare Network and Apex Medical Supplies," Charles ordered coldly. "Blacklist Apex from every regional registry. Notify our legal department to freeze all pending payments to Mr. Vance’s company pending a forensic audit of his accounts."

Dominic's face turned ashen. Apex Medical Supplies relied on Sterling Healthcare for eighty-five percent of its annual revenue. Without those contracts, Apex wasn't just bankrupt—it was dead.

"Wait! You can't do that!" Dominic screamed, his composure completely breaking. "We have a binding supply contract! If you terminate it, my company will go into default by Friday!"

"Then I suggest you prepare for default," Charles said smoothly.

Charles then turned his icy gaze onto Natalie. His eyes traveled down to the ivory cashmere coat wrapped around her shoulders.

"Who gave you permission to wear my granddaughter's bespoke coat?" Charles asked softly.

Natalie swallowed hard, backing away. "I... Dominic gave it to me! He said—"

"That coat was hand-stitched by master tailors in Milan, designed specifically for Audrey," Charles interrupted. "It bears the Sterling crest on the silk lining. You are currently in possession of stolen property."

Charles looked at the police officers standing behind him. "Officers, arrest that woman for grand larceny. And arrest that man for corporate fraud and theft of marital assets."

"What?!" Dominic yelled as two officers stepped forward, forcefully pulling his arms behind his back. "She signed the divorce papers! She gave up everything voluntarily! Look!" He held up the signed folder.

I smiled faintly, pulling a small silver pen from my sweater pocket.

"Check the ink, Dominic," I said softly. "I used a erasable security marker. By the time you reach the precinct, my signature will have completely vanished from those pages."

Dominic looked down at the folder in horror. Right before his eyes, the blue ink signatures on the bottom of every page were fading, turning into invisible ghosts of text.

"No... No! Audrey, please!" Dominic shrieked as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "Think about our marriage! Think about the boys—I mean, the twins!"

"Their names are Liam and Chloe," I said, turning my back on him to look through the glass at my babies. "And you just signed away your parental rights in section four of those papers you were so eager for me to sign. Goodbye, Dominic."

As the police dragged Dominic and a sobbing Natalie down the hallway, the NICU returned to its peaceful silence.

Charles placed a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You fought well, my dear. Now, let us make sure my great-grandchildren receive the absolute best care this world has to offer."
