Chapter 3 - The War in the ShadowsOver the next three weeks, the VIP suite on the top floor of Saint Aurelia became my sanctuary. Under the personal care of Dr. Julian Vance—the world's premier neonatal specialist, who happened to share no relation to Dominic despite the common surname—Liam and Chloe made miraculous progress. Their weight doubled, their respiratory tubes were removed, and their tiny lungs grew stronger by the day.

Dr. Julian Vance was a quiet, intensely focused man in his late thirties with dark hair, sharp brown eyes, and a gentle manner that immediately put me at ease. Every morning, he would personally inspect the twins, walking me through their progress with meticulous detail.
"They're fighters, Audrey," Julian said one afternoon, leaning over Chloe's crib with a gentle smile. "Chloe's oxygen saturation is at ninety-eight percent today. In two weeks, you'll be taking them home to the Sterling Manor."
"Thank you, Julian," I said softly, holding Liam close to my chest for skin-to-skin contact. "I don't know how I would have survived these past weeks without you and Grandfather."
"You're stronger than you give yourself credit for," Julian replied, looking at me with an warmth that made my heart flutter slightly. "Most people would have crumbled under that kind of betrayal."
Before I could answer, the door to the VIP lounge creaked open. My grandfather walked in, accompanied by his chief legal counsel, Victoria Reynolds—a formidable woman in a sleek navy suit who was known as the most feared litigator in the corporate world.
"Grandfather," I greeted him. "What's the update?"
Victoria opened her leather briefcase, laying several financial ledgers across the table.
"Dominic was released on high bail two days ago, backed by an anonymous hard-money lender," Victoria reported smoothly. "Instead of laying low, he’s going for broke. He has hired a notorious tabloid attorney and is preparing to file a civil lawsuit against you and the Sterling Group."
I narrowed my eyes. "On what grounds?"
"He's claiming that you manipulated him, fraudulently concealed your immense wealth during the marriage, and used your grandfather's influence to illegally destroy his business," Victoria explained. "Furthermore, he’s filing an emergency petition for full custody of Liam and Chloe, alleging that your post-birth medical trauma makes you mentally unfit to parent."
A cold rage washed over me. "He wants custody? He doesn't care about those babies. He didn't even know their names!"
"He doesn't want the children, Audrey," Charles said, his cane tapping against the hardwood floor. "He wants leverage. He knows that if he threatens custody, he might force us into a multi-million-dollar financial settlement to make him go away."
"He's mistaken," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "I spent three years playing the quiet, submissive wife while he built his pathetic ego on my back. I'm done hiding."
I turned to Victoria. "What do we have on his company, Apex Medical?"
Victoria smiled thinly, pulling out a red folder marked Confidential.
"We conducted the forensic audit your grandfather ordered. Dominic didn't just empty your joint accounts, Audrey. He was using Apex Medical to distribute grey-market, substandard surgical equipment to low-income regional clinics while pocketing the margin differences. And we found something even more interesting about his mistress, Natalie."
I raised an eyebrow. "What about her?"

"Natalie isn't just his pregnant secretary," Victoria said, sliding a photograph across the table. "She was planted in Dominic's company eight months ago by Richard Vance—Dominic's estranged uncle and the CEO of Vanguard Pharmaceuticals, your grandfather's main corporate rival."
The pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity. Dominic thought he was playing me, but he was being played by his own family.
