Chapter 6 - The Shattered FacadeThree months later, the legal machinery of the state was moving with relentless speed, propelled by the physical evidence and sustained public interest.

Mariela’s preliminary hearing was held at the Zapopan Criminal Court Complex. What Hector had assumed would be a routine, quietly settled proceeding behind closed doors had turned into a high-stakes judicial battle covered by national media.

The courtroom was packed to capacity. Journalists, legal analysts, and curious citizens jammed into the wooden galleries. On the defense side sat Mariela, wearing a plain, conservative dark grey suit, her face completely pale, devoid of any makeup. Beside her sat Hector, looking fifteen years older, his designer suit hanging loosely on his frame as his logistics business continued to implode under the weight of lost contracts and public boycotts. Doña Patricia sat in the second row, clutching a rosary, glaring across the aisle at Camila with pure, bitter hatred.

On the prosecution side sat Camila and Daniel, sitting alongside State Prosecutor Sofia Cruz—a brilliant, relentless trial attorney assigned to the case by the attorney general's office.

The presiding judge, Gustavo Vance, struck his wooden gavel down hard, bringing the noisy room to an immediate silence.

"We are here today for the formal indictment and bail review in The State v. Mariela Morales," Judge Vance announced, scanning the room over his spectacles. "Defense counsel, you have submitted a motion to dismiss all charges based on a claim of an accidental physical collision. Prosecutor Cruz, your response?"

Prosecutor Cruz stood up calmly, adjusting her dark suit jacket. "Your Honor, the defense’s claim of an 'accidental slip' is not only absurd, but physically impossible based on the high-definition security evidence recovered from the scene."

Cruz tapped a button on her tablet. The massive digital screens mounted along the courtroom walls flickered to life.

"Your Honor, we request permission to play State's Exhibit A," Cruz said.

"Objection!" Mariela’s lead defense lawyer, Attorney Ramos, yelled, jumping to his feet. "This video is highly prejudicial, unauthenticated, and was unlawfully seized by the victim's father without a search warrant!"

"Overruled," Judge Vance declared instantly. "The footage was provided voluntarily by a legal administrator of the system. The video is admitted."

The courtroom lights dimmed.

The high-definition video played across the giant monitors. The entire public gallery gasped in unison as the sequence unfolded:

Mariela sitting calmly on the patio sofa.

Little Sofia touching the plastic truck toy.

Mariela deliberately standing up, her face contorting into rage, pulling back her arm, and driving the mug of boiling liquid directly down into the baby's face.

The agonizing visual of the child burning while Mariela stepped over her, picked up her own son, and walked inside without offering aid.

In the gallery, several reporters gasped, covering their mouths in horror.

Doña Patricia hid her face in her hands, weeping loudly—not out of remorse for Sofia, but out of the horrific realization that her family's social standing was utterly destroyed.

"As the court can clearly see," Prosecutor Cruz stated, her voice booming off the walls, "this was not a slip. It was not a momentary lapse in control. It was a vicious, calculated act of violence against an innocent two-year-old child. Furthermore, certified medical records confirm second-degree deep tissue burns."

Prosecutor Cruz turned to face Mariela directly. "In light of this undeniable evidence, the State is upgrading the primary charge against Mariela Morales to Felony Aggravated Assault on a Minor with Intent to Cause Severe Bodily Harm, carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of eight years in state prison."

Mariela collapsed forward onto the defense desk, bursting into loud, frantic shrieks of panic. "Dad! Dad, do something! Help me! I can't go to prison! Dad!"

Hector sat frozen in his chair, staring blankly at the desk, his hands trembling violently, completely unable to look at his hysterical daughter.

"Additionally, Your Honor," Prosecutor Cruz continued, stepping toward the bench, "the State is officially issuing formal indictments for Hector Morales and Patricia Morales as co-defendants under charges of Felony Child Endangerment, Accomplice to Assault, and Obstruction of Justice for actively suppressing medical care and attempting to destroy digital evidence."

A collective gasp swept through the courtroom like a shockwave.

Hector’s head snapped up in utter disbelief. "What? You can't charge me! I didn't touch the child! It’s my house!"

"Silence in the court!" Judge Vance slammed his gavel down three times. "Mr. Morales, sit down and keep quiet, or I will have you remanded to custody for contempt immediately!"

Judge Vance looked down from the bench at Mariela, his eyes filled with profound disdain. "Based on the terrifying nature of the physical evidence, the severity of the victim's injuries, and the clear risk of flight backed by family wealth, bail for Mariela Morales is hereby revoked. She will remain in custody at the state detention facility pending trial."

"No! No! Please!" Mariela shrieked as two armed court bailiffs stepped forward, grabbed her arms, and dragged her out through the side holding door, her shoes scraping uselessly across the floor.

Hector and Patricia stood in the center of the courtroom, surrounded by whispering spectators and flashing news cameras, completely stripped of their prestige, their vast wealth entirely useless against the unyielding weight of justice.
