Chapter 3 - The Confrontation on the Marble FloorHector’s dark eyes narrowed into suspicious, heavy slits as he processed the scene: his second-born son standing crouched behind the massive cedar desk, a flash drive clutched tightly in his fist, the administrative security screen still blinking with a system reboot notification.

"I asked you a question, Daniel," Hector repeated, his voice dropping into that deep, authoritarian growl he had used for thirty years to silence his employees, intimidate corporate rivals, and keep his family in total submission. "Why are you sneaking around my private house like a common thief in the middle of the night?"

Daniel slowly drew himself up to his full height. For thirty-two years, Daniel had spent his life seeking this man’s approval—earning top marks at university, taking grueling double shifts at his father’s logistics firm for below-market pay, and silently swallowing the obvious, painful favoritism lavished on Mariela. But tonight, staring into Hector’s cold, arrogant eyes, the lifelong spell was broken forever.

"Sofia is in the hospital, Dad," Daniel said. His voice was unsettlingly quiet, stripped of all warmth, fear, or hesitation. "She has second-degree burns across her jaw, her neck, and her collarbone. The pediatric burn team is keeping her overnight because they are terrified the swelling might compromise her breathing."

Hector waved his hand dismissively through the air, taking a slow sip of his scotch as if Daniel had just complained about a minor stubbed toe. "Don't bring that dramatic garbage into my house. Your wife is an emotional, uneducated lunatic who exaggerates every minor event to gain attention. Children fall. Children spill things. Children get hurt. It builds character."

"She didn't fall, Dad. And she didn't spill anything." Daniel took two slow, deliberate steps toward his father, stopping inches from his face. "Mariela threw a cup of boiling coffee directly into her face because Sofia touched a plastic toy."

Hector’s jaw set into a rigid, stubborn line. "Mariela was protecting her child! Your daughter came running over, acting wild and aggressive toward Iker—"

"Sofia is two years old!" Daniel roared, his voice shattering the quiet luxury of the house like a sledgehammer hitting glass. "She weighs twenty-four pounds! She touched a piece of yellow plastic, and your golden daughter hurled scalding water at a baby's eyes!"

Rapid footsteps rushed down the marble staircase outside. Doña Patricia appeared in the doorway, clutching a floral silk robe around her waist, her hair tied in foam rollers. Her face was pale with sudden panic. Behind her slunk Mariela, wearing silk pajamas, clutching her phone against her chest, looking far more annoyed at having her sleep disrupted than concerned about her brother's presence.

"What is this disgraceful shouting in my home?" Patricia demanded, her voice shrill and piercing as she marched into the office, placing her body squarely between Daniel and Hector. "Daniel! Have you lost your mind? Coming into our home in the dead of night, screaming at your father after the pathetic, embarrassing scene your wife pulled on my terrace today?"

"A scene?" Daniel looked at his mother, feeling a deep, sickening wave of nausea. "Camila was holding her screaming baby whose skin was bubbling in her hands, while you shoved her toward the gate!"

"Because she was making an insufferable spectacle in front of Iker!" Patricia spat back, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "Iker is sensitive! He has emotional needs! Your wife was hysterical, screaming like an uncultured animal, traumatizing my grandson over a minor splash of warm liquid! It was an accident! Mariela’s hand slipped!"

"Her hand didn't slip, Mom," Daniel said softly. He raised his right hand, holding the black flash drive high between his thumb and forefinger. "I just watched the security video."

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The air became heavy, suffocating, and impossibly cold.

Mariela, who had been leaning casually against the doorframe with a bored, condescending smirk, suddenly froze. Her eyes darted from Daniel’s face to the glowing screen behind the desk, and then to the small piece of plastic in his hand.

"What... what video?" Mariela stammered, her voice losing its cocky edge.

"Camera 4," Daniel said, staring directly into his sister’s eyes. "High-definition wide-angle. I saw you look right at her. I saw you take two steps forward. I saw you aim. I saw you throw it. And then I saw Mom grab Camila by her hair to drag her out before anyone could run cold tap water over my daughter’s face."

Hector’s face turned from pale white to a dark, dangerous crimson. He took a heavy step toward the desk, glaring at the monitor. "You took my security files? Give me that drive right now, Daniel. That is private property from my house!"

"No," Daniel replied, sliding the drive deep into his inner coat pocket. "This isn't your property anymore. This is state's evidence."

"You treacherous little swine!" Patricia shrieked, lunging forward with her manicured nails aimed at Daniel’s face, but he caught her wrist mid-air and shoved her back. "You would accuse your own sister of such a thing? Over that low-class girl you married? Over a child that doesn't even carry our blood's dignity?"

The words hung in the air like poison.

Daniel stared at his mother. The subtle insults, the passive-aggressive jabs about Camila’s humble origins, the cold distance shown toward Sofia compared to the endless streams of money showered on Mariela’s son—it all crystallized into one undeniable truth. They had never viewed Sofia as family. To them, she was an unwanted, inferior intruder in their prestige lineage.

"Say that again," Daniel whispered.

"I said what I said!" Patricia snapped, emboldened by Hector standing beside her. "Mariela has a real legacy to protect! Iker is a Morales! You brought that girl and her child into our lives and expected us to treat them like royalty? You hand over that drive this instant, or so help me God, your father will cut you out of the logistics company, remove you from the family trust, and disown you before sunrise!"

Hector stepped up beside his wife, folding his arms across his chest. "You heard your mother, Daniel. Hand over the device, apologize to your sister for this insane slander, and we will handle the child’s medical bills quietly through a private family account. Otherwise, you walk out that door tonight with nothing. No job, no family, no future in this city."

Daniel looked at his father. He looked at his mother. Finally, he looked at Mariela, who was beginning to smirk again behind her parents, confident that her father’s wealth and political connections would once again shield her from consequences, just as they had when she crashed her car while drunk in college.

Daniel reached into his pocket. He didn't pull out the drive. He pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and pressed a single button on his screen. He placed the phone on speaker.

"Detective Alvarez," a sharp, official female voice echoed through the room speaker. "This is Zapopan Precinct Station 3. Did you secure the digital media, Mr. Morales?"

"I have the unedited raw footage secured on an encrypted external drive, Detective," Daniel said, staring straight into his father's eyes. "I am inside the residence right now. All key parties are present."

Patricia’s mouth dropped open in shock. Hector’s arms unwound instantly, all the color draining from his face.

"Understood," Detective Alvarez replied over the phone. "Stay where you are. Two patrol units are already en route to execute a scene inspection and collect formal statements regarding the felony child endangerment report filed by your wife from the hospital."

Daniel ended the call, placed the phone back in his pocket, and looked at his stunned family.

"You have about eight minutes to hire a lawyer, Mariela," Daniel said quietly. "Because this isn't getting settled in the living room."
