Chapter 12 - The Parole HearingIn the fourth year following the incident, the legal system made its final scheduled return to their lives.

A formal notice arrived from the State Department of Corrections: Mariela Morales had completed four and a half years of her seven-year sentence and was appearing before the state parole board at the women's facility in Guadalajara. As the primary victims, Camila and Daniel held the legal right to submit an impact statement or appear in person to contest or support her conditional release.

The night before the hearing, Daniel sat at the dining room table with a blank sheet of paper in front of him.

"Are you going to go?" Camila asked, setting a warm cup of chamomile tea beside his elbow.

"I don't need to go to Guadalajara to prove my strength anymore," Daniel said, looking up at his wife. "Four years ago, I needed the judge to declare her guilty so the world would know the truth. Today, our life doesn't depend on whether Mariela sits in a cell or walks the street. She has no power over us."

Instead of travelling to the prison court, Daniel wrote a four-line statement on behalf of his family and transmitted it digitally to the parole board master:

We do not harbor hatred, nor do we seek additional punishment. The State must determine whether Mariela Morales poses a danger to society. Our family has built a life beyond her reach, and we request only that the permanent ten-year restraining order protecting our daughter remains strictly enforced upon any eventual release.

Two days later, the parole board issued its ruling. Based on her prison conduct record and complete financial ruin, Mariela was granted conditional parole under strict supervision—with mandatory psychological therapy, full prohibition from contacting her brother’s family, and three years of unannounced check-ins by state social services.

On the afternoon the decision was announced, Daniel received a brief text message from his former corporate colleague who had stayed in touch from Zapopan.

Mariela walked out of the gates today, Daniel. She looks completely defeated. Her son Iker didn't even recognize her at first—he’s been raised by Patricia in that small rental flat. They have nothing left.

Daniel read the message once, deleted the string, and put his phone inside his desk drawer.

There was no joy in hearing of his sister's hollow existence, nor was there any regret. The law had delivered its structural judgment, but life had delivered a far more absolute verdict: those who sow cruelty inherit isolation, while those who fight for love build an unshakeable fortress.
