Chapter 4 - The Midnight Arrest and the ScrambleThe high-pitched wail of police sirens tore through the quiet, gated neighborhood eight minutes later. Bright red and blue emergency lights flashed violently against the pristine white stucco walls of the Morales estate, casting manic shadows across the manicured lawn.

For the first time in her thirty years of spoiled, sheltered life, Mariela looked utterly, helplessly terrified.

"Mom! Do something! Tell them they can't come in here!" Mariela sobbed, grabbing Patricia’s arm as heavy, authoritative knocks echoed off the solid mahogany front door. "Dad! Call Uncle Roberto! Call the judge! You know everyone in the state government!"

Hector was already furiously typing on his phone, his voice trembling with uncharacteristic panic as he demanded his senior corporate counsel wake up. "Listen to me, Oscar! I need you at my house right now! My idiot son brought the police to my front door! Yes, the police are outside right now!"

Daniel walked down the gallery hallway, unlocked the heavy timber door, and pulled it wide open. Two uniformed Zapopan police officers stood on the porch, flanked by Detective Alvarez—a tall, sharp-eyed woman in her mid-forties with a stern posture and a no-nonsense demeanor.

"Daniel Morales?" Detective Alvarez asked, displaying her identification badge.

"Yes, Detective. Thank you for arriving so quickly," Daniel said, stepping aside to let them enter. "The assault occurred on the rear patio. The primary suspect who threw the scalding liquid is my sister, Mariela Morales. My parents, Hector and Patricia Morales, witnessed the event, actively suppressed aid, and forced my wife and injured child off the property."

"That is a complete, malicious lie!" Patricia shrieked, sprinting into the foyer with her hands waving frantically in the air. "Officer, listen to me! This man is mentally unstable! His wife had a minor domestic accident in our garden, and now they are trying to extort my husband for money!"

Detective Alvarez didn't even glance at her. She gestured to her two officers. "Secure the patio area immediately. Preserve the physical scene."

"You can't go back there! This is private property!" Hector roared, stepping directly into Detective Alvarez’s path, puffing out his chest in the same intimidating posture he used on his factory workers. "Do you have any idea who I am? I run Morales Logistics! I am a major contributor to the municipal police foundation!"

Detective Alvarez took a single step forward, bringing her face inches from Hector’s. Her voice dropped into a register of pure steel. "Mr. Morales, if you place your body in front of me again or attempt to interfere with an active felony investigation, I will have you handcuffed and placed in the back of my cruiser for obstruction of justice before your lawyer finishes putting his pants on. Do I make myself clear?"

Hector opened his mouth to shout another threat, but the absolute lack of fear in the detective’s eyes stopped him cold. He slowly backed away, his hands trembling with suppressed rage.

"Mr. Daniel Morales," Alvarez said, turning back to Daniel. "Do you have the digital media evidence?"

"Right here," Daniel said, handing over the drive. "It contains the raw footage from Camera 4 between 16:00 and 16:30. It captures the strike, the deliberate trajectory, and the immediate cover-up."

"Excellent. My technical team will process this immediately at the station," Alvarez said. She turned her attention to Mariela, who was cowering against the hallway console table, crying hysterically. "Mariela Morales?"

"It... it was an accident!" Mariela stammered, her voice cracking into childish whimpers. "The mug was hot! I bumped the table! Sofia ran into me! I didn't mean to—"

"Save your statement for your legal counsel, Ms. Morales," Alvarez interrupted cleanly. "Based on the severe physical burns verified by the pediatric medical staff at Zapopan General Hospital, the sworn statement provided by Camila Morales, and the digital evidence, you are being placed under arrest for aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury to a minor."

"No! No! You can't touch her!" Patricia screamed, trying to throw her body over Mariela as the two patrol officers stepped forward. "She has a child! She's a mother! She has a five-year-old boy sleeping upstairs!"

"Then I suggest you arrange for a legal guardian to monitor the child while your daughter is processed at the station," Alvarez said coldly.

The officers smoothly pulled Patricia off her daughter, grabbed Mariela’s wrists, and clicked the heavy silver handcuffs securely around her wrists.

Mariela let out a high-pitched scream of utter despair as she was led down the front steps in her pajamas, her manicured nails scraping uselessly against the doorframe. Across the street, several neighbors were already standing on their second-story balconies, holding up smartphones, recording the high-society arrest.

"Daniel! You traitorous bastard!" Hector bellowed from the driveway, his voice cracking with rage as the police car doors slammed shut. "You are dead to this family! Do you hear me? Dead! You will never see a single cent of my money! I will destroy your business! I will make sure you never work in this city again!"

Daniel stood quietly on the front steps, watching the flashing red and blue lights fade into the dark suburban night. He felt no victory, no glee, and no relief—only a profound, cold sense of absolute liberation.

He pulled out his phone and dialed Camila’s direct line at the hospital.

"It's done," Daniel said, his voice instantly softening into a tender whisper. "She’s in custody. And I secured the video."

On the other end of the line, sitting beside her sleeping daughter’s hospital bed in the dim room, Camila closed her eyes, letting a long, shaky breath escape her lips. "Come back to us, Daniel. Please. We need you here."

"I'm coming home," Daniel said.
