Chapter 6 - A FOREVER FAMILY

One year later.
The morning sun shone brightly through the stained-glass windows of a historic stone chapel in the heart of the Hamptons. The scent of white roses and sweet jasmine filled the air.
In the bridal suite, I stood before a full-length mirror, smoothing down the train of my lace wedding dress. The ring on my left hand sparkled brilliantly in the light.
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and my best friend walked in, holding a small flower basket. Following right behind her was seven-year-old Mia, looking like a little angel in a white tulle dress with a pink sash around her waist. She held Gerald the elephant, who was wearing a tiny matching black bowtie.
"Mommy! You look like a real princess!" Mia gasped, running up to hug me.
"And you look like a real flower girl, sweetie," I smiled, kneeling down to fix her ribbon. "Are you ready?"
"Yes! And guess what?" Mia whispered excitedly. "Adrian said after the wedding, we get to go to Hawaii and swim with sea turtles!"
"He did, did he?" I laughed softly, shaking my head. Adrian spoiled her endlessly, but he had also instilled in her a sense of kindness, confidence, and security that filled my heart with gratitude every single day.
A moment later, the chapel doors opened, and the organ began to play a soft, beautiful melody.
I walked down the aisle on the arm of my mother, who had moved back to New York to be close to us. The pews were filled with close friends, colleagues, and family.
At the end of the aisle stood Adrian.
He took my breath away. Dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, he looked drop-dead gorgeous. But what made tears spring to my eyes was the way he looked at me—with pure, unadulterated devotion, love, and joy.
When I reached him, he took my hands in his. His touch was warm, steady, and familiar.
"You are the most beautiful woman in the world," Adrian whispered, his gray-blue eyes shining with emotion.
The ceremony was intimate and breathtaking. But right before the priest could ask for the ring, Mia stepped forward from the front row, tugging gently on Adrian’s tuxedo jacket.
The priest paused, smiling. The guests chuckled softly.
"Yes, my sweet girl?" Adrian asked, kneeling down to her level right there at the altar.
Mia looked at him seriously, holding out a small, shiny metal object. It was a toy sheriff's badge she had bought at the airport store.
"You saved Mommy from the bad guys, and you make us pancakes, and you never look angry anymore," Mia announced proudly into the quiet chapel. "So I think you are official now."
She pinned the shiny badge onto his tuxedo lapel.
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment, visibly moved, before pulling Mia into a tight, warm hug. "Thank you, Mia. It's the highest honor of my life."
He looked up at me, taking my hand once again as he stood up.
"With this ring," Adrian said, looking deep into my eyes as he slipped the band onto my finger, "I give you my heart, my life, and my promise to protect you and our daughter for all of eternity."
"I pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared with a beaming smile. "You may kiss the bride!"
Adrian didn't wait a second. He pulled me into his arms and dipped me back, kissing me with a passion that made the entire chapel erupt into thunderous applause and cheers.
When he brought me back up, he scooped Mia up into his arm, holding my hand firmly in his other.
Together, the three of us walked down the aisle into the brilliant, warm sunshine outside.
The cold billionaire was gone forever. In his place was the man who had protected us, loved us, and healed our broken world.
As we stepped into our new life together, Mia looked up at Adrian, then at me, and smiled her bright, beautiful smile.

"I told you he should be my daddy," she whispered happily.
And for the rest of my life, I knew she was absolutely right.
