Chapter 2 - THE PROTECTOR'S OFFER

The silence on the line stretched for five agonizing seconds before Julian let out a nervous, bitter laugh over the speaker.

"Adrian Kane?" Julian sneered, trying to sound brave. "What is Manhattan's golden boy doing messing in my family business? Claire is my ex. Mia is my kid. You've got no standing here, money-man."

Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't sound angry. That was what made him terrifying. The colder he got, the more lethal he became.

"You haven't paid child support in six years," Adrian replied smoothly, walking toward his desk and pressing a button on his intercom. "You have an outstanding warrant for illegal gambling debts in Atlantic City, and two hours ago, you made an extortion call to an employee of Kane Global on a recorded line. I own three private security firms, Julian. My men already mapped your cell signal to a diner on 42nd Street."

I gasped, looking at Adrian in shock. He hadn't even looked at a computer, yet he moved with the swift efficiency of a military strategist.

"You're bluffing," Julian stammered, his voice suddenly losing its bravado.

"Try me," Adrian said softly. "Step within five hundred feet of Claire or Mia again, and I won't just lock you up. I will buy out every debt collector you owe money to in the tri-state area and hand them your personal address. Do we understand each other?"

A choked sound came from the speaker, followed by the frantic click of the line disconnecting.

Adrian calmly set my phone on his desk and turned back to me.

My head was spinning. My legs felt like lead. For two years, I had viewed Adrian Kane as an unapproachable, cold titan of industry—a man who cared about quarterly profits, brand equity, and flawless execution. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined he would step into the messy, terrifying reality of my personal life and shield me without a second thought.

"He won't bother you today," Adrian said, his tone softening slightly as he looked at me. "My security team is already sweeping your block in Brooklyn. But a man like that, backed into a corner by debt, is unpredictable."

"Thank you," I whispered, tears finally escaping my eyelashes and slipping down my cheek. "I... I don't know what to say, Mr. Kane. I’ve been dealing with him alone for weeks. I was so afraid he’d ruin my standing at the firm."

Adrian took a slow step closer to me. Without warning, he reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a crisp silk handkerchief, and gently dabbed the tear from my cheek. His knuckles brushed lightly against my skin, sending a strange, electric jolt through my chest.

"First of all, stop calling me Mr. Kane when we're alone," he murmured, his gray-blue eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. "My name is Adrian."

"Adrian," I breathed, the word feeling foreign yet dangerously natural on my tongue.

"Second," he continued, taking my hand in his. His palm was warm, solid, and reassuring. "You are not going back to your apartment in Brooklyn tonight."

I blinked, pulling back slightly. "What? Why?"

"Because Julian knows where you live, and until my legal team serves him with an emergency restraining order and freezes his assets, your home isn't secure," Adrian stated plainly. "I have a penthouse in Tribeca. It has twenty-four-hour private security, keycard elevator access, and three spare bedrooms."

"No," I immediately protested, shaking my head. "No, I can't do that. That’s far too much. I can get a hotel room—"

"A hotel room isn't secure," Adrian countered, his authoritative tone returning. "And besides, Mia needs stability right now. She doesn't need to be dragged from hotel to hotel while you worry about your safety."

At the mention of her name, Mia looked up from her coloring book on the sofa. She had her yellow crayon held high in the air.

"Are we going to a castle?" Mia asked innocently. "Mommy, does the handsome man have a castle?"

Adrian’s mouth twitched, the corner of his lips pulling up into that rare, devastatingly attractive smile I had seen earlier in the hallway. He walked over to the sofa, unbuttoning his suit jacket and kneeling in front of my daughter once again.

"It’s not a castle, Mia," Adrian said, his voice miraculously transforming into something gentle and warm. "But it’s high up in the sky, it has a big balcony, and my chef makes the best chocolate chip pancakes in New York."

Mia’s eyes lit up like Christmas lights. "Can Gerald come?"

"Gerald gets the master guest suite," Adrian promised solemnly, extending his pinky finger to her. "Deal?"

Mia wrapped her tiny pinky around his massive finger. "Deal!"

I stood there, watching the most feared billionaire in Manhattan make a pinky-swear with my six-year-old daughter. My heart pounded furiously in my chest, split between terror at the threat of Julian and a sudden, overwhelming realization:

Moving into Adrian Kane's private life was going to be far more dangerous for my heart than anything I had ever faced before.
