Chapter 5 - THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM

The collapse of Richard Vance was swift and total. Within two hours, federal authorities had taken Vance into custody for corporate fraud, while NYPD officers arrested Julian at a bus station near New Jersey as he attempted to flee the state with Vance’s payoff money.
The forged documents were completely cleared, my name was fully vindicated, and the board of directors released a public statement issuing an official apology to me and naming me as the new Senior Vice President of Creative Operations at Blackwell & Reed.
Yet, despite the victory, the emotional toll of the day left me utterly exhausted.
By 6:00 PM, Adrian and I returned to the Tribeca penthouse. The quiet luxury of the apartment felt like a peaceful sanctuary after the chaotic storm of the corporate world.
When we stepped through the elevator, Mia came running across the living room, her small arms wide open.
"Mommy! Handsome Boss!" she cheered, throwing her arms around my legs.
Adrian immediately dropped to one knee, wrapping his powerful arms around both of us. He lifted Mia into his arms, kissing her cheek gently.
"How was your day, little one?" Adrian asked softly.
"I made a drawing for you!" Mia announced proudly, pulling a piece of paper from her pocket and unfolding it.
It was a crayon drawing of three figures holding hands under a big yellow sun: a tall man in a dark suit, a woman with long hair, and a little girl with a stuffed elephant. Written at the top in wobbly child handwriting were the words: MY FAMILY.
I looked at the drawing, and tears filled my eyes—not tears of fear or stress, but tears of pure, overwhelming happiness.
Adrian stared at the drawing for a long moment. His throat worked as he swallowed, his emotion visible in the soft glow of his gray-blue eyes. He carefully folded the drawing and placed it gently into his inner breast pocket, right next to his heart.
"This is the most valuable thing I own," Adrian whispered softly to Mia.
That evening, after Mia was tucked in bed, Adrian took my hand and led me out onto the private terrace. The night was clear, stars twinkling above the dazzling Manhattan skyline.
He poured two glasses of wine, handing one to me.
"Are you okay, Claire?" he asked, searching my face with deep concern. "Today was... a nightmare."
"I'm more than okay," I said, stepping close to him and resting my head against his chest. I could hear the steady, strong beat of his heart beneath his dress shirt. "For six years, I thought I had to be strong all the time. I thought if I let down my guard for even one second, everything would crumble. But today... you fought for me when I couldn't fight for myself."
Adrian wrapped his arms tightly around me, holding me close against the cool night wind.
"I will always fight for you, Claire," he murmured into my hair. "And for Mia. You two are my life now."
"Adrian..." I looked up into his handsome face. "What happens now?"
Adrian smiled—that warm, devastatingly handsome smile that had once been so rare, but was now reserved only for us. He set his wine glass down, reached into his jacket pocket, and pulled out a velvet box.
My breath hitched. My heart stopped.
"Adrian... what is that?"
"I bought this eighteen months ago," Adrian confessed softly, opening the box to reveal a flawless, cushion-cut pink diamond ring that sparkled like stars in the moonlight. "The day you led the pitch for the Cartier account, I knew you were the only woman I would ever love. But you were so guarded, so professional... I waited until I knew I could give you the world."
He dropped to one knee on the terrace floor, holding the ring up to me.
"Claire Montgomery," Adrian said, his voice trembling with raw, honest emotion. "You and Mia brought light into my cold, empty world. You turned a house into a home. Will you marry me and make me the happiest man alive?"
Tears streamed down my cheeks, but I was smiling so wide my face hurt.
May you like
"Yes!" I sobbed happily, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!"
Adrian slipped the ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into a passionate, breathtaking kiss as the lights of New York shimmered below us like a sea of diamonds.
