Chapter 3 - THE EMBERS OF SUSPICION

Night had fallen over Long Island by the time the heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate rolled shut behind the SUV. The snow was falling thicker now, blanketing the manicured lawns and marble statues in a quiet shroud of white.

Inside the east wing of the manor, the master guest suite had been prepared on short notice. A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, throwing warm, golden light across the hardwood floors and velvet furnishings.

Lily had already fallen fast asleep on the oversized king bed, wrapped in a plush feather duvet, her worn stuffed rabbit still clutched tightly in her small arms.

Elena stood by the tall arched window, looking out into the snowy gardens below. She was wearing a soft knit sweater loaned to her by the house manager, a hot mug of chamomile tea resting in her hands. The contrast between her cold, terrifying apartment in Queens and the luxurious warmth of this fortress felt surreal, like a dream she might wake up from at any second.

The quiet click of the heavy oak door made her turn around.

Dominic walked into the suite. He had shed his formal coat and tie; his dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the sharp, powerful build of a man who moved through danger with absolute confidence. He carried a silver tray with a plate of warm soup and crusty bread, setting it down gently on the coffee table near the fire.

"She is a tough little girl," Dominic said quietly, glancing toward the sleeping child on the bed. "Paulie said she didn't cry once during the entire drive."

Elena let out a soft, bittersweet laugh, stepping away from the window. "She had to be tough. It's just been the two of us since she was born. Her father... left before she was even a month old. I've spent five years trying to build a wall around her so she would never feel scared."

She looked at Dominic, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of immense gratitude and lingering hesitation. "I still can't believe she walked into your house. Do you have any idea how terrifying you are to normal people, Mr. Moretti?"

Dominic allowed the faintest shadow of a smile to touch his lips. He sat down on the leather armchair opposite the fireplace, stretching his long legs out.

"I am aware," Dominic admitted smoothly. "Which is why I was thoroughly unimpressed by her rubber boots, but deeply impressed by her courage."

Elena sat down on the sofa across from him, holding her tea mug with both hands. "What happens now? Julian Thorne is still your chief financial officer. He controls the syndicate’s legal accounts, the shipping entries, the payroll... everything."

"Julian is ambitious, but he is not stupid," Dominic stated calmly. "He wouldn't have attempted to eliminate you unless he was preparing a major move against me. What exactly did you find in those 1948 ledgers, Elena? Tell me everything."

Elena took a slow sip of her tea, organizing her thoughts. As a professional document restorer, her mind was sharp, methodical, and precise.

"Three weeks ago," Elena began, her tone shifting into pure professional focus, "I was tasked with scanning physical property deeds from the original Moretti shipping offices on Pier 42. While removing the chemical preservation backing on a ledger from November 1948, I noticed double-layered paper."

Dominic’s eyes sharpened. "A hidden pocket?"

"Yes," Elena nodded. "Inside was a second set of handwritten accounts signed by your grandfather, Enzo Moretti, and a man named Senator Arthur Vance."

Dominic froze. "Vance?"

"My great-uncle," Elena revealed quietly. "My family cut ties with him decades ago before he passed away. But those ledgers proved that the foundation of the Moretti shipping monopoly wasn't created through hostile takeover—it was a equal joint venture between Enzo Moretti and Arthur Vance. Under the terms of the original 1948 covenant, fifty percent of the voting shares in the Moretti Harbor Logistics Corporation were held in trust for Arthur Vance’s bloodline."

Dominic leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, his dark eyes burning with intense calculation.

The Moretti Harbor Logistics Corporation was the multi-billion-dollar legal backbone of Dominic’s entire empire. It owned the docks, the warehouses, and the international freight licenses that allowed his family to operate across the globe.

"And because Arthur Vance had no direct male heirs," Dominic murmured, realizing the terrifying truth, "those trust shares defaulted into dormant status... unless a direct living descendant claimed them."

"Unless I claimed them," Elena whispered. "Or unless someone found out I existed, stole the original covenant from the archives, and forced me out of the picture so they could forge a transfer of those shares to themselves."

"Julian," Dominic spat, the name tasting like poison on his tongue.

"Julian tracked my genealogy six months ago," Elena explained, her voice trembling slightly. "He realized I had no idea about my great-uncle's connection to your grandfather. He let me work in the archives, waiting for me to pull those specific ledgers so he could identify the physical documents, steal them, and then use your digital key to erase me from the company."

Dominic stood up slowly. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees as his terrifying presence filled the space once more.

Julian Thorne wasn't just stealing money; he was attempting a bloodless coup of the entire Moretti empire. By seizing fifty percent of the Harbor Logistics Corporation through Elena’s stolen inheritance, Julian could legally freeze Dominic’s assets, strip him of his shipping dominance, and hand control of the docks over to rival families in New York.

And to pull it off, Julian was willing to destroy Elena Vance and her five-year-old daughter.

Dominic walked over to the side of the king bed. He looked down at Lily, reaching out one long, warm finger to gently smooth a strand of blonde hair away from her forehead. The little girl murmured softly in her sleep, turning her small face into his touch.

Dominic turned back to Elena. The look in his eyes was lethal, absolute, and fiercely protective.

"Tomorrow morning," Dominic said, his voice quiet as steel, "Julian has scheduled a private board meeting at the Manhattan headquarters to finalize the annual logistics audit. He believes you are currently hiding in fear, preparing to flee the state."

Elena stood up, taking a breath. "What are you going to do?"

May you like

Dominic walked up to her, stopping so close she could feel the intense, magnetic heat radiating from his frame. He reached out, his hand resting gently against the side of her neck, his thumb brushing her cheekbone with unbelievable softness.

"Tomorrow morning," Dominic whispered, his dark eyes locking onto hers, "you and Lily are going to walk into that boardroom beside me. And I am going to tear Julian Thorne’s world apart in front of every capo in New York."
