Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

Twenty minutes later, they were inside the high-security bunker of Vale Enterprises, located forty floors above the glittering, chaotic skyline of Manhattan. The room was impenetrable—reinforced steel walls, encrypted communication arrays, and a private medical suite.
Lily had finally fallen asleep on the leather sofa, wrapped in Alexander’s custom cashmere suit jacket.
Camila stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her hands trembling as she held a cup of hot tea. Alexander walked into the room, his tie discarded, his shirtsleeves rolled up. He held a tablet containing the initial forensic report of the explosion.
"It wasn't a lethal device," Alexander said quietly, breaking the heavy silence. "It was a thermite flash-charge. It destroyed my secondary security grid and left a message scorched into the brickwork."
Camila turned around, her face pale. "What did it say?"
"'The debt is due, Vale. We found the missing piece.'" Alexander read, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He stepped closer to her, his shadow swallowing her light. "They were talking about Lily, Camila. Someone tracked you. Someone knew she was mine before I even did. Now, tell me the truth. Why did you disappear seven years ago?"
Camila let out a bitter, breathy laugh, tears welling in her eyes. "Why did I disappear? Alexander, you sent your personal attorney to my apartment with a signed document and a check for five million dollars! The note said that a middle-class botanist didn't fit into the future of the Vale empire. It told me to leave New York and never look back."
Alexander’s entire body stiffened. "I never sent an attorney. I never signed a check. The night you vanished, I came to your apartment and found it completely emptied. There was a letter on the counter in your handwriting saying you had found someone else—someone who wasn't anchored to the violence of the shipping industry."
Camila dropped her tea cup, the porcelain shattering on the hardwood floor. "What? I never wrote a letter! I waited for you for three days! I was three weeks pregnant, Alexander! I was terrified!"
"Julian," Alexander whispered, a dark, lethal realization washing over his face.
"Your stepbrother?" Camila breathed.
"He didn't want me to have an heir," Alexander analyzed, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly cold register. "Seven years ago, my father’s will stated that control of the Vale Shipping Ports would go entirely to me, provided I established a stable family line. If I remained single or without an heir by my thirty-fifth birthday—which is next month—the voting shares revert to Julian."

"Oh my god," Camila whispered, looking over at the sleeping Lily. "Julian intercepted us. He made us believe we hated each other so he could inherit the ports."
"And now he knows Lily exists," Alexander said, walking over to the sofa and looking down at his daughter’s sleeping face. "He knows his time is running out. The explosion at the restaurant wasn't just a warning to me. It was a hunting declaration. He’s going to try to eliminate her before the board vote next week."
