Chapter 4: The Legal Firestorm

The aftermath of the Gala of Retribution was a scorched-earth campaign that dominated the national headlines for weeks. The "Rivas Fall" became the most talked-about scandal of the decade. The security footage of the assault, combined with the live-streamed arrest at the Four Seasons, created a PR nightmare that no legal team could fix.

I sat in the grand conference room of Grupo Salazar, located on the top floor of a skyscraper overlooking the city. The room was bustling with activity. Paralegals carried boxes of files, financial analysts muttered over spreadsheets, and Sofia was at the center of it all, directing the legal assault like a seasoned general.

"We have them backed into a corner from which there is no escape," Sofia said, dropping a thick manila folder onto the glass table in front of me and my father. "Santiago’s criminal defense lawyers tried to argue for a medical release, claiming he’s suffering from extreme stress. The judge laughed them out of court. Because of the federal embezzlement charges, bail has been officially revoked. He is staying in the high-security wing of Reclusorio Norte until the trial."

"And Beatriz?" I asked, sipping my tea.

"Under house arrest at a secondary property, since the main mansion has been officially seized by Grupo Salazar as part of the debt foreclosure," Sofia replied with a satisfied smirk. "She’s broke, Valeria. All her jewelry, her bank accounts, her art collection—everything has been frozen or liquidated to pay off their primary creditors. She’s living on a court-allotted stipend that barely covers groceries."

Hearing that the proud, cruel Beatriz Rivas was reduced to counting pennies brought a grim satisfaction to my heart. But I knew the most critical hurdle was still ahead of us.

"What about the custody hearing?" I asked, my heart tightening. Even from prison, Santiago had filed for full custody of Leo, using a team of bottom-feeding lawyers funded by a radical anti-divorce organization that wanted to use the case for publicity.

"That’s what we’re preparing for now," Sofia said, her expression turning serious. "They’re going to attack your character, Valeria. They know they can’t win on the facts, so they’re going to try to paint you as a calculating woman who married a wealthy man just to ruin him and steal his fortune for your father's empire. They will bring up your sudden disappearance from society when you married him, trying to claim you were hiding a troubled past."

"Let them try," my father said, his voice deep and menacing. "I will buy the entire court before I let them touch a single hair on my grandson's head."

"No, Papa," I interrupted, placing a hand on his arm. "We don't do this under the table. We win this completely by the book, in the full light of day. I want the world to see that the law protects the innocent, not just the wealthy."

The day of the custody hearing arrived under a gloomy, rain-slicked sky. The courthouse was surrounded by reporters and paparazzi, their flashes illuminating the dark morning. I walked up the stone steps wearing a sharp, conservative navy blue suit, holding my father’s hand.

Inside the family court, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Santiago was brought in from the detention center in handcuffs, wearing a standard beige inmate uniform. The contrast between his current appearance and the man who had arrogant strutted around his mansion was jarring. He looked gaunt, his eyes hollow and dark, filled with a bitter, simmering hatred.

His lawyer, a slick man named Estrada, stood up to make his opening statement.

"Your Honor," Estrada began, gesturing dramatically toward Santiago. "My client is a victim of a massive corporate conspiracy. Valeria Salazar hid her true identity for years, pretending to be a helpless orphan to entrap a successful businessman. This entire marriage was a setup engineered by Grupo Salazar to infiltrate and destroy Rivas Enterprises. Valeria Salazar is a cold, calculating actress who is using this innocent child as a financial weapon."

I watched Estrada speak, feeling a strange sense of calm. A year ago, these words would have made me cry, made me doubt myself. Now, they felt pathetic.

When it was Sofia's turn, she didn't make a dramatic speech. She simply walked to the evidence table and picked up a digital tablet.

"Your Honor, the defense claims my client is an actress," Sofia said calmly. "Let’s look at the reality of the environment she was living in."

Sofia played the audio recordings I had taken in the weeks leading up to the assault. The courtroom filled with Santiago’s booming, cruel voice, mocking my background, threatening to take my baby, telling me I was nothing. Then, she played the recording of Beatriz calmly advising her son not to leave visible marks before a charity gala.

The judge’s expression grew progressively darker with every second that played. Several people in the gallery gasped. Santiago buried his face in his cuffed hands, knowing the audio was damning.

"Furthermore," Sofia continued, submitting a new set of documents. "We have the certified deposition from Dr. Fuentes, the psychiatrist Beatriz Rivas hired. Dr. Fuentes has confessed to accepting a half-million-dollar bribe to falsify a psychiatric evaluation declaring Valeria Salazar unfit to parent. He has surrendered his medical license and turned state's evidence."

The judge slammed her gavel down, silencing the rising murmurs in the room. She looked over her spectacles at Santiago and his lawyer with utter disgust.

"Mr. Estrada," the judge said, her voice dripping with ice. "Do you have anything else to present to this court that isn't a desperate attempt to gaslight a victim of severe domestic abuse?"

Estrada opened his mouth, looked at his trembling client, and slowly sat down. "No, Your Honor."

The judge turned her gaze to me, her expression softening. "Valeria Salazar, this court finds the behavior of your husband and his family to be not only abhorrent but criminal. Full, sole legal and physical custody of Leo Salazar is granted to you immediately. Santiago Rivas is denied all visitation rights, permanently. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued, effective immediately."

The gavel struck the desk. Bang.

A gasp of pure relief escaped my lips as Sofia hugged me tightly. I looked across the room at Santiago. He looked up, his eyes meeting mine. The anger was gone, replaced by the crushing weight of total defeat. As the guards stood him up to lead him back to his cell, he looked like a ghost.

I turned to my father, who had a fierce grin on his face. "It's over, Papa," I whispered.

"No, my love," my father said, kissing my forehead. "The nightmare is over. Your life is finally beginning."
