Chapter 3: The Gala of Retribution

The grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in Mexico City was a sea of opulence. Crystal chandeliers cast a dazzling glow over the city’s elite—politicians, billionaires, and high-society influencers chatter over glasses of vintage champagne. This was the annual Foundation Gala, an event Santiago Rivas had spent months planning to cement his status as the king of high society.
Santiago had refused to cancel the event, believing that showing up would project an image of strength and innocence to his investors. He thought that by appearing in public, unbothered, he could control the narrative.
He was wrong.
I stood in the holding room just off the main ballroom, adjusting the sleek, emerald-green silk dress my father had flown in from Paris. It was tailored perfectly, concealing the post-pregnancy changes to my body while making me look regal, powerful, and utterly striking. Around my neck hung a diamond choker that had belonged to my mother. I looked in the mirror, and for the first time in years, I recognized the woman staring back. I was no longer a victim. I was a Salazar.
"Are you ready, my queen?" my father asked, walking into the room. He looked sharp in his classic black tuxedo, his presence commanding absolute respect.
"More than ready," I said, taking his offered arm. "Where is Leo?"
"Safe at the estate with Marco and a team of pediatric nurses," Ricardo reassured me. "The perimeter is locked down. Santiago won't get within five miles of him."
As the heavy double doors of the ballroom opened for us, the ambient noise of the crowd suddenly began to dip. It started with a few whispers near the entrance, then spread like wildfire through the room until a profound, shocked silence fell over the entire gala.
At the far end of the room, standing near the VIP bar, Santiago and Beatriz were mid-conversation with a group of nervous-looking investors. Santiago looked up, his drink freezing halfway to his mouth.
I didn't hide. I didn't look down. I walked into the room with my head held high, my father by my side. The crowd naturally parted for us, creating a wide path that led directly toward the Rivas family. The murmurs began instantly, a low hum of cameras clicking and phones being raised.
"Valeria," Santiago breathed as we came to a halt a few feet away. His eyes darted nervously to the crowd around us, his PR training desperately trying to kick in. He forced a smile, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. "Darling... you shouldn't be out of the hospital. You're not well. Let me take you home."
He took a step toward me, reaching out a hand.
"Do not touch me, Santiago," I said, my voice clear and resonant, carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "And do not call me your darling. My name is Valeria Salazar. And the only place you'll be taking anyone is to court."
Beatriz stepped forward, her face twisted in a mask of pure venom. "You ungrateful little gutter rat," she hissed, forgetting the crowd around her for a split second. "We plucked you from obscurity! We gave you everything! And you repay us by trying to destroy my son's reputation with lies?"
"Lies?" I laughed, a cold, mocking sound that echoed through the ballroom. "Is it a lie that your son raised his hand against his eight-month-pregnant wife? Is it a lie that you, Beatriz, signed falsified psychiatric documents to have me locked away so you could steal my child?"
"That's enough!" Santiago shouted, his temper flaring, his carefully crafted mask slipping completely. He glared at the onlookers. "Turn off those phones! This is a private matter!"
"Actually, it’s a public matter," a new voice intervened.
Sofia, my attorney, stepped out from the crowd, accompanied by two men in dark suits wearing federal badges. The murmurs in the crowd turned into audible gasps.
"Santiago Rivas," one of the federal officers announced, pulling a document from his coat. "You are under arrest for federal financial fraud, embezzlement of corporate pension funds, and tax evasion. You are also being served with a felony warrant for aggravated domestic assault."
Santiago stumbled back, his face draining of all color. "What? No! That’s impossible! My accounts are secure!"
"They were," Sofia said smoothly. "Until we traced the twelve million dollars you illegally transferred from the employee trust fund two days ago. Your CFO has already turned state’s evidence in exchange for immunity. He gave us everything, Santiago."
"You... you bitch," Santiago snarled, his eyes locking onto me with a murderous rage. He lunged forward, completely unhinged, abandoning all pretense of the elegant businessman. "I will kill you! You ruined me!"
Before he could even get close, three federal agents tackled him to the ground. The pristine marble floor of the Four Seasons ballroom met his face with a loud smack. The crowd erupted into chaos, phones capturing every single second of the disgraced millionaire being pinned down, cuffed, and dragged away in his expensive tuxedo.
Beatriz shrieked, rushing toward her son, but a female officer intercepted her. "Beatriz Rivas, you are also being detained for questioning regarding conspiracy to commit medical fraud and corporate complicity."
As they dragged Santiago past me, his hair disheveled, his jacket torn, he looked up at me. There was no power left in his eyes—only the pathetic, desperate realization that he had lost everything.
I stepped closer to him, leaning down slightly so only he could hear me.
"You told me I was nothing without you, Santiago," I whispered, my voice dripping with icy satisfaction. "But look at you now. No money. No family name. No son. You are the one who is nothing."
He was dragged out of the ballroom, his boots scraping pitifully against the floor.

My father placed a proud hand on my shoulder. I looked around the room at the high-society elite who had once looked down on me as a simple school teacher. Now, they looked at me with a mixture of awe and terror.
The battle for my freedom was won. But as I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering lights of Mexico City, I knew the battle for my son's future was just beginning.
