Chapter 1: The Illusion Shatters

The silence that blanketed the foyer of the Lomas de Chapultepec mansion was suffocating. The click of Ricardo Salazar’s leather shoes against the pristine marble floor sounded like the steady, ominous ticking of a countdown clock. Behind him, his personal security detail stood like towering shadows, their faces expressionless, their presence absolute.

Santiago Rivas remained frozen, his hand still half-raised in the air, a grotesque monument to his own cruelty. His mind, usually so sharp and calculating on the trading floors, seemed entirely incapable of processing the sight before him. Ricardo Salazar—the man whose net worth could swallow the Rivas empire whole, the billionaire titan who rarely granted audience to anyone outside his inner circle—was standing inside his home.

"Mr. Salazar," Santiago stammered, his voice instantly losing its booming authority, replaced by the pathetic tremor of a boy caught in a lie. He quickly lowered his hand, trying to smooth down his unbuttoned white shirt, his polished corporate facade desperately fighting to reassert itself. "I... I don't understand. To what do we owe the honor? If this is about the port expansion contract, my office—"

"Shut up, Santiago," Ricardo said. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried the weight of an avalanche.

Ricardo didn’t even look at Santiago. His piercing gray eyes moved directly to the floor, where I sat, my arms still wrapped tightly around my eight-month-pregnant belly. In an instant, the terrifying tycoon vanished, replaced by a father whose heart was breaking. He dropped to his knees, utterly disregarding his expensive tailored suit, and gathered me into his arms.

"Valeria," he breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion I hadn't heard since my mother passed away. "My sweet girl. I’m here. Daddy’s here."

The warmth of his embrace shattered the icy armor I had built up over the past two years. A sob escaped my throat, raw and agonizing. "Papa... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I should have listened to you."

"Shh, no. Never apologize to me," Ricardo murmured, kissing the top of my head as he gently helped me stand. One of his bodyguards immediately stepped forward, offering a soft wool blanket to wrap around my trembling shoulders. "You have nothing to be ashamed of. The only shame in this room belongs to the parasites standing beneath this roof."

From the staircase, the sharp click of a wine glass hitting the wooden railing broke the tension. Beatriz Rivas had finally moved. Her face was pale, but the arrogance that defined her entire existence quickly rushed back to mask her panic. She stepped down the remaining stairs, her chin held high, though her fingers trembled as she tightened her grip on her glass.

"Mr. Salazar, please," Beatriz said, forcing a tight, aristocratic smile that didn't reach her cold eyes. "There has clearly been a massive misunderstanding here. This is a private family matter. A domestic dispute between a husband and a wife. Surely a man of your stature understands that emotions run high during pregnancy. Valeria has been... unstable. She requires medical attention, which we are prepared to provide."

Ricardo slowly stood up, turning his full, terrifying attention toward Beatriz. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"Unstable?" Ricardo asked, a dark, lethal smile touching his lips. "Is that the narrative you’ve been constructing in those forged medical reports, Beatriz? The ones where you plan to commit my daughter to a private asylum so you can steal my grandson?"

Beatriz gasping for air was the most satisfying sound I had heard in years. Santiago’s head snapped toward his mother, his eyes wide with genuine shock. He hadn't known about the full extent of his mother's paper trail, or perhaps he hadn't realized someone had found it.

"How... how do you know about that?" Santiago whispered, looking between Ricardo and me. Then, the realization finally struck him like a physical blow. His eyes locked onto mine, dilated with horror. "Valeria Mendoza... Salazar. You're Ricardo Salazar's daughter."

"She is my only heir," Ricardo stated, his voice ringing through the cavernous foyer. "And you, Santiago, are a bankrupt fraud."

Ricardo signaled to one of the attorneys standing behind him. The man stepped forward, opening a sleek leather briefcase and pulling out a thick stack of legal documents.

"As of five minutes ago," the attorney announced, his voice devoid of empathy, "Grupo Salazar has officially called in all outstanding debts owed by Rivas Enterprises. Furthermore, we have purchased the primary lines of credit from your secondary lenders. You have exactly twenty-four hours to liquidate your assets and pay a total sum of eighty-four million dollars. Failure to do so will result in an immediate foreclosure on this property, your corporate offices, and the freezing of all personal accounts."

"You can't do that!" Santiago roared, taking a step forward, his face flushing a violent purple. "That's illegal! It's predatory!"

Before Santiago could advance another inch, Ricardo’s head of security, a mountain of a man named Marco, stepped into his path. The sheer physical dominance was enough to make Santiago stumble backward, tripping over his own feet onto the marble floor.

"I can, and I have," Ricardo said coldly. "But the financial ruin of your family name is just the prologue, Santiago. You raised your hand against my daughter. You threatened the life of my unborn grandson."

Ricardo pulled a small, silver digital clock from his overcoat pocket—the exact clock that had been sitting on our living room mantelpiece. "The livestream of your little performance tonight didn't just go to Valeria's attorney. It was broadcast directly to a secure server. The police are waiting outside the gates of this compound as we speak."

Beatriz dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the floor, a dark red stain spreading across the white marble like blood. "Santiago, do something!" she shrieked, her carefully manicured composure entirely disintegrating. "They can't ruin us! We are the Rivas family!"

"The Rivas family is dead," Ricardo said flatly. He turned back to me, his expression softening instantly. "Come, Valeria. Let’s go home."

I looked back one last time as my father guided me toward the grand front doors. Santiago was on his knees, staring blankly at the floor, the realization of his complete destruction finally sinking in. Beatriz was screaming obscenities at the attorneys, her voice screeching like a wounded animal.

As the heavy oak doors shut behind us, the cool night air hit my face. For the first time in two years, I could finally breathe. But as we walked toward the waiting convoy of black SUVs, a sharp, sudden pain bloomed across my lower abdomen, causing me to gasp and stumble.

I gripped my father’s arm, my knuckles turning white. "Papa..." I whispered, terror gripping my heart as a warm sensation washed over my legs. "The baby... it's time."
