Chapter 8 - The Siege of Lincoln Park

The attack on the Lincoln Park brownstone came at 2:00 AM under a thick blanket of fog. The syndicate didn't send local enforcers; they sent a highly trained, black-clad tactical unit equipped with night-vision optics and suppressed weapons. They breached the perimeter wall silently, cutting the power lines to the house before Nathan’s guards could even sound the alarm.

Inside, the house went completely dark.

In the master bedroom upstairs, Evelyn woke up instantly as the central air conditioning unit hummed to a halt. She reached out, her hands finding June and Jade, who were already awake, their eyes wide with a familiar terror.

"Mommy?" June whispered. "Is it him again?"

"Shh," Evelyn said, pulling them down off the bed onto the floor, remembering Nathan’s strict instructions. If the lights go out, get under the bed and don't move until you see the silver ring.

Downstairs, the front door exploded inward with a deafening blast. The syndicate operators flooded the hallway, their weapon lights cutting through the dust and smoke. But they didn't find an empty house or a panicked family. They found Nathan Russo waiting at the end of the hall, holding a heavy 12-gauge combat shotgun.

"Welcome to Chicago," Nathan muttered.

The shotgun roared, the massive blast blowing the first two operators off their feet and destroying the tactical formation. Caleb appeared from the kitchen flank, firing his submachine gun in disciplined, three-round bursts that caught the attackers in a lethal crossfire.

The hallway turned into a slaughterhouse within seconds. The syndicate operators, realizing they had walked into a fortified kill-zone, tried to retreat, but Nathan’s outdoor guards closed the trap from behind, cutting off the escape route through the garden.

One wounded attacker, desperate to complete the mission, managed to crawl past the stairs and head toward the upper level where the family was hidden. He dragged himself up the steps, his weapon raised, his eyes fixed on the master bedroom door.

He reached the landing, his hand touching the doorknob, when a heavy boot came down on his wrist, crushing the bones against the wood.

Nathan stood over him, his shotgun resting against his shoulder. He looked down at the bleeding operator with a cold, detached pity. "Tell your bosses that the contract is permanently canceled."

Nathan didn’t wait for an answer. He turned the doorknob and stepped into the room. It was pitch black, but he held his left hand up, letting the faint moonlight catch the silver ring on his finger.

"It's over," Nathan said into the silence. "You're safe."

From beneath the bed, June and Jade crawled out, followed by Evelyn. They didn't look at the smoke or the distant sound of sirens; they looked at Nathan. For the first time in months, Evelyn’s face broke into a genuine, beautiful smile. They had survived the worst the world could throw at them, and they were still standing.
