Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Two years later, Bellini’s cafe was just as warm, but the atmosphere had changed completely. It was no longer a place of quiet fear; it was a place of life.

It was a bright Saturday afternoon, and the cafe was packed with neighborhood families. Behind the counter, Tessa was helping a new assistant, while in the back corner, a large table had been reserved for a very special occasion. It was June and Jade’s eleventh birthday.

The table was covered in bright pink wrapping paper, balloons, and a massive chocolate cake with eleven candles waiting to be lit. Evelyn sat at the head of the table, looking radiant in a green linen dress, her laughter mingling with the chatter of the twins' school friends. She had started working as an administrator at a local non-profit organization, helping families who had been displaced by crime—a position Nathan had helped fund anonymously.

At the edge of the room, standing near the register, Nathan Russo watched the party. He still wore his black coat, and his silver ring still commanded absolute respect from anyone who knew his name, but his posture was relaxed. He was no longer a man living solely in the shadows.

Caleb walked up beside him, holding a small, neatly wrapped gift box. "The security detail reports the perimeter is entirely clean, boss. Not a cloud on the horizon."

"Good," Nathan said, taking the box from Caleb. "Go get some cake, Caleb. That's an order."

Caleb chuckled, a rare sound, and headed toward the kitchen.

Nathan walked over to the birthday table. The moment the twins saw him approaching, they abandoned their friends and ran straight to him. They didn't grab his sleeve in terror this time; they threw their arms around his waist in a synchronized, joyous hug.

"You're late, Uncle Nathan!" Jade accused him, a playful pout on her face.

"A mafia boss is never late, Jade," Nathan countered with a wink. "He arrives exactly when the cake is about to be cut."

He handed them the gift box. Inside were two matching silver charms—small, perfectly detailed replicas of the marine bell from the harbor, transformed from a symbol of horror into a badge of their survival and their unbreakable bond.

"Make a wish, girls," Evelyn called out, her eyes meeting Nathan’s across the table. There was no fear in her gaze anymore, only a deep, enduring affection and the shared understanding of a family built not from blood, but from rescue.

June and Jade took a deep breath together, their hands intertwined, and blew out the eleven candles in a single, triumphant breath. The room erupted into applause, the sound filling the cafe, rising up into the rafters and out into the warm Chicago air.

The rain had stopped a long time ago. The storm was over, and for the first time in his life, Nathan Russo knew exactly what he was protecting.
