Chapter 6 - A Fragmented Reunion

The drive back to Nora’s tailor shop was silent. Evelyn sat in the back of the armored sedan, wrapped in Caleb’s dry jacket, her eyes fixed on the rain-slicked streets of Chicago. She looked like a woman who had spent days preparing for her own death, only to be suddenly dropped back into the land of the living. She didn't know whether to scream or sleep.
"Who are you really?" she asked quietly, her reflection in the window looking at Nathan, who sat in the front passenger seat. "The men who took me... they spoke about you like you were a monster. They said the Russo family owned the blood on these streets."
Nathan didn’t turn around. "They weren't entirely wrong, Mrs. Carter. I run a criminal enterprise. I don't pretend to be a saint."
"Then why did you save my girls?"
"Because they asked me to," Nathan said simply. "And because the man who was chasing them didn't know which one was June. In my world, we do terrible things for power and money. But we don't hunt children. Anyone who does isn't a businessman; they're a disease. And I tend to clean up my city."
The car pulled into the narrow alleyway behind Nora’s shop. The light over the back door was a soft, welcoming amber. Caleb killed the engine, his eyes still scanning the rooftops out of habit, but the perimeter was clean. Nathan’s soldiers had secured the block.
Nathan led Evelyn through the back door into the warm, fabric-scented interior of the tailor shop. The smell of cedar and hot tea immediately replaced the cold stench of the harbor.
From the front room, a tiny gasp broke the silence.
June and Jade were sitting on Nora’s velvet sofa, wrapped in oversized wool blankets. The moment the door clicked open, they stood up. When they saw Evelyn standing behind Nathan, their faces didn't just light up; they shattered with relief.
"Mommy!" Jade shrieked, dropping her blanket and running across the hardwood floor, her bare feet smacking against the timber. June was right behind her, her usual cautious demeanor vanishing as she threw herself into her mother's arms.
Evelyn dropped to her knees, catching both girls at once, pulling them into a tight, desperate embrace that looked like it might never end. She buried her face in June’s wet hair, her shoulders shaking as she finally let out the tears she had held back during her days in the vault.
Nathan stood by the door, watching the reunion with a completely unreadable expression. Caleb stood a step behind him, his arms crossed, looking down at his boots to give the family some semblance of privacy.

Nora walked out from the back kitchen, holding a fresh pot of chamomile tea. She caught Nathan’s eye and gave him a slow, approving nod. "They didn't sleep a wink, Nathan. They kept asking if the man with the silver ring would keep his promise."
"I always keep my promises, Nora," Nathan said quietly. He looked back at the three huddled figures on the floor. The immediate danger was over, but Nathan knew the architecture of the underworld too well. Grant Mercer was dead, and his recovery team was gone, but the "buyers"—the faceless entities with deep pockets—wouldn't just forget about a broken contract. They would look for the leak. And they would look for the assets.
