Chapter 6 - The True Sanctuary

Two Years Later.

The scent of pine trees and fresh mountain air filled the deck of a beautiful, modern cabin overlooking a quiet lake in Aspen. It wasn't a sprawling mansion designed to impress investors; it was a warm, sun-drenched sanctuary built for peace.

A toddler with bright green eyes and a head full of golden curls came running out of the sliding glass doors, holding a wooden toy duck.

"Mama! Look! Duck!" Ivy giggled, her cheeks rosy from the cool mountain breeze.

"I see it, sweetie," I smiled, lifting her up into my arms and kissing her forehead. She was healthy, vibrant, and completely surrounded by love.

Molly walked out onto the deck, carrying two mugs of hot apple cider. She set one down in front of me, looking out over the sparkling water. "Jennifer sent the final quarterly update from the liquidators."

"And?" I asked, wrapping my arm around Ivy.

"Brent’s firm went under six months ago," Molly said, her voice calm and satisfied. "He’s currently working as a mid-level manager at a retail chain in Denver to pay off the bank fraud restitution. Diane had to downsize to a one-bedroom apartment, and Karen is living with roommates. They’re completely out of our lives, Tessa."

I took a sip of the warm cider, watching a family of deer drink from the edge of the lake.

When Brent locked me out in the rain with my three-day-old daughter, he thought he had taken my home. He never understood that a home isn't defined by a security code, a grand staircase, or an expensive piece of real estate.

My home was my strength, my sister's loyalty, and the bright, beautiful future I was building for my daughter. And as I held Ivy close against my chest, listening to her soft, happy laughter, I knew that this time, nobody could ever lock us out again.
